The shop mob assembled once again. This fun-filled event involves a large number of shoppers who "mob" a local business and commit to spending $20 in their store. It helps people recognize all that's available in our local businesses as well as offering some fun and fellowship, and gives the business a boost. This great concept started in 2012 and the tradition continues.
The Secret Santa campaign and volunteer assembly night was another success. As always, volunteers showed up in strong numbers to assemble, wrap and deliver hampers to those in our community in need. Volunteers got to choose from a variety of gifts laid out, as well as add to the food hampers that were also in starting phases.
One can't underestimate the commitment and dedication volunteer directors, Sharon Riou and Sandra Kelly, put into this project - right from setting up collection depots in various locations in town and regularly picking up from these collection depots to the day when they spend numerous hours cleaning up the last of the collection depots, shop for the vacancies on their list, arrange the gift cards and groceries and then transport everything to the hall to lay out for volunteers to assemble each hamper. It is another project that demonstrates Christmas and community spirit and the power of our volunteers.
Full of Christmas concerts, choir performances, spirit days, drama productions, basketball and other events, the students at Unity's schools are ready for a break.
After a very busy December with not only school work but plenty of in school action as well, all three schools will be dismissed early tomorrow to enjoy a two-week Christmas break before returning to classes Jan. 2. For high school students this will be time to prep for semester finals. For elementary students, it will be time to begin some new projects for the second half of their year.
Unity Minor Hockey was very pleased to be the beneficiary of a generous donation from Unity Credit Union. Through proceeds earned at their annual provincial credit union hockey tournament hosted in Unity in 2013, the group donated a set of dividing bumper pads to alleviate congestion on the ice for the large number of kids playing in younger divisions of hockey.
These pads are easy to move, attach together and re-situate to allow two sets of ice for beginner hockey players, to better adapt to a smaller ice surface with less obstructions involved with multiple players on ice at once.
Teams appreciate the support of their fans in the stands. Hockey will still be rocking the ice into and throughout Christmas break. While younger divisions often use this as downtime for players and coaches (and parents), older divisions often still play games to complete their schedules.
You will want to be sure to check the weekly schedule hanging at the arena for what's coming up at the rink. This schedule includes public skating times. You can also view this schedule on the Town of Unity website.
The curling club is now looking for teams for their annual Boxing Day Spiel. You can contact the rink at 306-228-2212 to enter your team or name for this event.
Coffee row has been buzzing about all the fun activities that have taken place in the community this festive season. The cold weather snap was certain to top the discussion too. Getting closer to Christmas, rowers discuss their plans for the Christmas holidays. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
