Shared soup teaches Thanksgiving principles

Are you still digesting your turkey and pumpkin pie from Thanksgiving celebrations? I am still thinking, although Thanksgiving weekend got a little cooler, we are still enjoying above average temperatures and sunnier skies.

The minor hockey season is off to a flying start with a 3-on-3 tournament that ended last weekend.

Are you still digesting your turkey and pumpkin pie from Thanksgiving celebrations? I am still thinking, although Thanksgiving weekend got a little cooler, we are still enjoying above average temperatures and sunnier skies. It will be interesting to see what this fall has in store for us.

UCHS Warriors football team hosted their last home game Sept. 28 with a victory over Spiritwood. They now hit the road until playoffs. Their first road game against Macklin Oct. 4 was a real offensive show ending with a Warrior victory of 66-42. This takes them to Biggar this week and a win guarantees them a home playoff game.

St. Peter's School held their annual shared soup event, Oct. 3, which teaches some of the principles of Thanksgiving. Coming up for Education Week are numerous activities including the seniors' tea Oct. 17 starting at 1:30 p.m. with entertainment followed by tea and dainties. The SCC will provide a pancake breakfast for students Oct. 19 to start the learning day off with a hearty, hot breakfast.

Life at the arena has begun, with minor hockey already starting on their 3-on-3 hockey tournament Oct. 1, ending this weekend. The Skills of Gold camp that ran Oct. 6 and 7 in Unity, put on by the Sask. Hockey Association, hosted approximately 50 kids in their weekend of on and off ice instruction. Upcoming is the Sylvan Lake Hockey Camp held here each year near the end of October.

Hockey season is in full swing. All teams have now been on the ice. As well there have been public skating and shinny times slotted in there. The arena will be super busy this winter with the multiple teams made up from the mass of registrations that came in in early September.

Congratulations to Kelsey Wildeman, part of the bronze medal winning University of Saskatchewan softball team at nationals held in Regina the Thanksgiving long weekend. The U of S team had an undefeated season this year but came up against some strong Ontario squads that pushed them out of the gold medal match. The team rebounded to capture bronze at this national championship.

Next week is the big treasure chest draw for the contest Delta Co-op and Unity Credit Union are partnering for. This contest is to celebrate the upcoming Co-operatives Week and the International Year of the Co-op. Members can pick up game tiles from Oct. 1 to 18, at either Unity Credit Union or Delta Co-op, to help them complete a slogan on their game card to earn a chance to pick a key that could open a treasure chest filled with goodies. For any transaction completed at either location during the contest time, members will receive their game tile. Once they complete a game card they will keep it and bring it to Delta Co-op, deli location, to choose a key that could open the treasure chest full of prizes.

The UFC steak and lobster dinner night is this weekend. Although tickets sales have been cut off you can still volunteer by calling Nicole at the town office 228-2621.

Although some seats have been acclaimed there is still the mayor's seat being contested so be sure to find the information on your candidate of choice to help you make an informed decision for civic elections to be held Oct. 24.

The Unity fire department held their annual open house and barbecue Oct. 11 in recognition of Fire Safety and Prevention Week. Proceeds from this year's event are going towards fellow firefighter Robb Henderson and his family as they head to Edmonton for son Seth's upcoming heart surgery. Robb is also a member of the ambulance crew in Unity.

Unity Skating Club has begun its season with 43 CanSkaters, seven kids in group test and 18 senior skaters. The club has various competitions and fun days lined up for the new year and will already be in the early planning stages for their annual ice carnival March 1.

The Unity Curling Club held its annual meeting Oct. 1. Registration is slated for Oct. 16 and 17 at the curling club and the club encourages all curlers to put their names in whether as a team, an individual or a spare. Players can register for Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays league play or, if you are interested, there is also Tuesday and Thursday afternoon league. And the club has plans to continue the after school junior program, in addition to the high school team development and practices.

Coming off a very successful year with numerous events and two teams winning provincial medals, hopes are high for more success from the Unity Curling Club.

This year's events will include a mixed cash spiel Nov 23-25. In December, the club is proud to host the Sifto Cash Spiel Tour of Champions from Dec. 14 - 16. Also in December will be the popular Boxing Day family fun spiel. Coming up in the New Year are a multitude of events including a senior men's and women's cash spiel Jan 4 - 6, senior men's regionals Feb 1 - 3 and the JayDee AgTech Annual Men's Open Feb. 5 - 10. In March the club looks forward to their annual Oilperson's spiel, mixed regional playdowns, Bramiche Farms Ladies' Open Spiel and the Funspiel windup at season's end.

The curling club is proud of their five-sheet facility which has new lights this year. The large lobby and lounge has viewing space spanned clearly over all five sheets, including TVs at the opposite end for the close-to-the-button calls for the spectators.

Flu shots can now be received with a variety of clinics set up around town. Please check posters, the Unity paper or Heartland Health for opportunities for you to receive immunization for flu season this year.

The Lions Club is presenting their ever-popular dinner theatre with The Blind Date, Nov. 9 and 10. Tickets are now available for only $35 from the town office or Lions' member Rose Mauthe at 228-2579. Kraft's Catering is doing the cooking so you know you are in for a good meal. As well, Roxanne Mamer is directing the production so it is sure to be a hit.

Coffee row folks are still talking about those Riders. The team's first away game in some time was against Toronto, Thanksgiving Monday, and the team showed they have their eyes on the prize by winning quite decidedly. Some fans are claiming this was their best game this season and certainly Durant, Sheets and Dressler are common choices for fan favourites. The NHL lockout is still a bone of contention. Harvest for the most part is nearly complete in our area with only a few farmers left to complete their 2012 harvest. There is much activity coming up in the community this month, so "rowers" will have plenty of topics to discuss ahead. ... So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week ...
