The Borden Anglican and United Churches were both beautifully decorated for the Thanksgiving services Oct. 12. At Borden United there will be no church Oct. 19, as the minister, Gayle Wensley, has her daughter Erica's wedding Oct. 18 and Gayle is doing the preparations for the reception in the Borden Community Centre with the United Church helping cook, serve and cleanup.
The Borden Farmers' Market wound up their weekly Friday markets Oct. 10, with a good turnout for the last day. Attending every week has been Rita and Bill Shukin, Connie and Daryl Kenakin, Helen Sutherland, Arlene Proctor, Karen Ker, Eileen Petrun, Natalie Gramiak and yours truly. Now we can all have a break until our Christmas sale on Saturday, Dec. 6 in the Borden Community Centre from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., when we will make a presentation to the Borden firemen and to Peter Thiessen for taking out the fire vehicles and cleaning up every week. The 2015 Grad class will be selling lunch all day.
The Borden Friendship Club held their business meeting Oct. 8 to hear reports and upcoming activities. Kaiser night started Oct. 7 and Oct. 14 will be a Kaiser tournament, with Kaiser every Tuesday at 7 p.m. and a tournament the second Tuesday of each month. The club will again be having bingo nights starting Wednesday Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. and every third Wednesday until March 18, with cash prizes. Potluck supper and birthday celebration is Oct. 22 at 5:45 p.m. and the Harvest Tea and Bake sale is Wednesday, Oct. 29 with proceeds from the door going to the Borden Museum. Rita Smith reported on the work done in the park - fruit trees planted, mulch spread, cement benches coming in Oct. 1. More people are using the walking trail. The club will look into having a sign erected at the park giving recognition to the seniors' club for all their work in getting the grants and having work done.
The Model T Bar & Grille have done extensive outside renovating this fall, having painted top and bottom boards and new siding in place on the west and south side, a new window replacing the old patio door on the south side and new patio doors installed on the east side. The colour is a replica of how the hotel looked in the early 1920s.
The former Borden Art and Eatery is being leased by Grace Mbuekor and her daughter Barinadum from Saskatoon, formerly from Nigeria, moving here 17 years ago as refugees. The new restaurant will be called GG Garden Grill and Mama G will be serving Canadian favorites and some Nigerian specialties. The Grand Opening is slated for Saturday, Oct. 18 from noon to 6:30 p.m.
