SHSAA Conference Senior Girls’ Volleyball Championships were held around the province Nov. 6 and 7, and Maymont hosted the 1A for this region. Competing for the chance to go on to regionals were Borden, Blaine Lake, Canwood, Maymont and Medstead.
The Medstead girls were dominant all day, winning their four matches. Borden won three and lost only to Medstead, and the other three teams won one game and lost three. Advancing to regionals Nov. 14 from this conference are Medstead and Borden, with the host site to be decided.
Borden will be hosting the Senior 1A Boys’ Conference Nov. 14 and the two winners from that will go to regionals Nov. 21. Winners from regionals will advance to provincials which, for the girls, Medstead is the host Nov. 20-21 and the boys will go to Annaheim Nov. 27-28.
The Borden Community Centre Preservation Committee is trying to raise funds for kitchen upgrades to the centre. They are holding a perogy and ham supper and Great Plains is entertaining Nov. 20 in the centre.
Supper tickets do not need to be bought in advance, but for the show at 7 p.m., which features Darrel & Saskia – songwriters who sing blues, folk, country gospel and more and toured with Gary Fjellgaard – the $10 tickets need to be bought or booked by Nov. 17 from Block’s Agencies, Affinity Credit Union or call Dianne S. at 306-997-2235or Dianne R. at 306-997-2219.
Affinity Credit Union holds a toonie draw every month to raise funds for the centre kitchen upgrades and in October David Wiebe of Borden won $82.
Borden School held their Remembrance Day service Nov. 5. Laying wreaths were Cadet Dyllan Tracksell, Deputy Mayor Tony Martens, armed forces marine Brian Gabrysh and each classroom.
Each classroom then took part in the program with Grade 1 reciting a Remembrance Day poem, Grades 2/3/4 sang Let There Be Peace on Earth with actions and Grades 5/6 sang Never Let Go. MacKenzie Piprell and Brooklyn Gader read a poem, Spirits of the Past. Brian Gabrysh gave the message. A video compiled by Rachel Sutherland and Grade 10 was shown on 100 Years of Flanders Fields.
Principal Dean Broughton thanked everyone who came, the participants and teachers for a job well-done, especially Mr. Dyck and Mrs. Yuskiw who organized everything.
The gym walls were decorated with posters of Remembrance Day and poppies and a display of a bed and bedding used by a Second World War veteran.
Our family has my son Bryan Pidwerbesky, from Christchuch, New Zealand, arriving Nov. 11, and staying until Nov. 16. This past week, along with his fellow workers from Fulton Hogan Co. of New Zealand, Bryan has travelled from Vancouver, B.C., to Toronto, Ont., Niagara Falls, Ont., Edmonton, Alta, Calgary, Alta. and back to Vancouver, meeting with road building companies. After the others fly back Nov. 11, he is coming to Saskatchewan where we will be exchanging Christmas presents.
At the Lloydminister Stockade Roundup last week, Clythemane Shorthorns – G & S Sutherland – of Borden showed the reserve grand champion shorthorn bull, Clythe Mane Boulder 12B, and Serhienko Cattle Co. of Maymont showed the grand champion Charlois bull, SVY Grizzly 521C.
