Approximately 20 participants joined in the first self defence class for women held in Wilkie May 5. The class was put on and instructed by Bev Barth who runs the Wilkie Karate Club. The class was free of charge and ran from 2-4 p.m. in the Norman Carter School gym. Women aged 16 years and up were invited to attend the class where they learned different skills such as basic self-defence, different releases from chokeholds and grabs, as well as punches and blocks.

There was also a discussion which revolved around street smarts; how to keep yourself safe, what to watch for and how to protect yourself with items you have on hand.

Barth says, "The idea (came) from the CWL bridal fashion show. I thought the women in Wilkie would enjoy something different." After asking around and receiving positive feedback, the class was a go. She also says that it would be fun to run it again in the fall.

Although Barth instructed the event, she did have assistants which included two male youths who helped with the demonstrations: Kay-Leah Delainey, Randal Delainey, Mitchel Delainey, Shirley Holzman, Sophie Metlewsky and Kaylee Thomas.

Barth says, "I'd like to thank the students who came out to help me. We had a blast. Karate has really been a self-confidence booster for me and I believe the women who participated had a good time, acquired a few new skills and learned that karate is not a sport for guys or for the young. Anyone can do it."
