A canadian-made investigative documentary that exposes historical documents about illegal and segregationist practice by the Canadian government that forced First Nations people to carry a pass in order to leave their reserve beginning in 1885 and lasting for more than 60 years will be screened for the public at the North Battleford Library on Wednesday, April 5, at 6:30 p.m. Speaking at the screening will be Alex Williams, the director of The Pass System.
Through extensive archival research and the testimony of First Nations Elders, the film reveals new documentary evidence, exposing a system much more widespread and impactful than previously known.Â
The film features Indigenous Elders from Treaty 4, 6 & 7 where the system took place, including celebrated artist Alex Janvier, who currently is featured in a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada. The film is narrated by actor and activist Tantoo Cardinal and has music by Juno-nominated Cree and Mennonite composer, Cris Derksen.
