It’s the first weekend of June already! Make the most of your summer as you never know what Mother Nature has in store for us for weather. Will she shine on us warmly all summer long or will we be watching the skies for severe weather?

“Scotty” the T. Rex exhibit has been seeing a few visitors at the Unity museum since he arrived May 20. This massive display could only be housed in the Swarthmore Church building at the museum grounds, giving visitors plenty of space to see “him” and his accompanying exhibit.

It’s a unique experience to host this in our community so be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to come see Scotty yourself and be sure to bring your guests when they come to visit. “Scotty” is only one of many sights to see at our local museum and, in their 35th anniversary year, museum volunteers encourage everyone to make this their best year yet.

St. Peter’s School staff and  students are engaged in fun and educational field trips. And the Grade 6 class is winding down their elementary school years as next year they head to the hallways of the high school.

Unity Public School students and staff were part of the annual Western Days parade last weekend, demonstrating their in motioninitiative by walking or biking the parade route in their school colours.

Students are excited some of their gym classes will include swim time at the new swimming pool open this week. The Grade 5 class heads out June 10 on their field trip while the Grade 3s take their year-end field trip June 12. The Grade 6 class, in their last year at UPS, have fundraised for and earned their field trip slated for June 19.

The annual Unity Composite High School awards ceremony in the gym is June 9 and soon to follow will be those students who are invited to the Living Sky School Division awards ceremony in North Battleford. Graduation is slated for June 26.

This weekend is the annual Unity Miners’ slo-pitch tournament, so if you want to come and watch some ball, come for a booth burger or enjoy a beverage with your friends in the tent, c’mon down!

If you’re tired of television and want to enjoy the great outdoors, come to the Unity ball diamonds where you can take in games from all divisions of teams in the Unity Minor Ball program as well as the junior ladies’ team, the lady Rustlers, the senior men’s Cardinals or the Friday night slo-pitch league.

After a dedicated and successful fundraising process, thanks to the Unity Facilities Committee, the long anticipated Unity Credit Union Aquatic Centre is open. The official grand opening is set to happen June 10.

Residents are excited to see this dream become a reality and the pool staff has been working hard to get everything ready for lessons, public swimming, aquasizes and all of the other great activities held at our local pool.

There is always room for more vendors at the Unity farmers’ market held at the Adanac Hall on the museum grounds each Thursday from 2 – 5 p.m. Vendors offer homemade and homegrown products for health-conscious and buy-local shoppers.

This weekend is the town-wide garage sale and there are plenty of addresses on the garage sale list. You can pick up your address list at the town office and enjoy a day of browsing or shopping for bargains.

Coffee row folks are enjoying the summer sunshine. Rowers are talking about this year’s growing season, laying down their predictions for crops this year. Once June rolls around these folks are done with hockey talk and are far more interested in Rider season, which will begin in just a few weeks. Action at the ball diamonds is also a discussion topic. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next time …
