The large crowd on the lawn of UCHS is not a fire drill but there was some red and fiery product involved as teams of staff and students competed in the annual Chili Cook Off as part of Welcome Week activities. Participants paid for a bottomless cup to try chili from each team participating and were required to vote on their favourite.

The nice weather that prevailed the week of Sept. 15 was a big help to farmers getting those crops off for this year's harvest. Let's hope the good weather and great harvest continues.

St. Peter's School continues to be a busy place as all the programs are back into action including choir, the AR reading program, and cross-country events. Cross-country events continue with a meet in Biggar Sept. 25 and the district meet Oct. 2. Students were donating squares of material to make a special AR quilt, which is now sewn into a lap quilt and ready for the $1 fundraiser raffle tickets available in the library. St. Peter's students are also faithfully involved in activities in the church.

Unity Public School students are also into a busy fall. Cross-country students have competed in a couple of meets and are preparing for upcoming events. Students participated in the annual Terry Fox Walk. Students are enjoying plenty of sunshine and warm weather on the playground during break times. It won't be long before October activities will take place at UPS.

Unity Composite High School hosted Welcome Week activity last week that included a pajama day and a breakfast sponsored and served by Delta Co-op, the Grade 12s' burger sale and a formal and school picture day. The infamous chili cook-off was Thursday, as well as jersey day and the school portion of the Terry Fox Walk.

UCHS Warriors' sports started with a bang Friday with the home-opener of Warrior football along with the senior girls' home volleyball tournament. All events were kicked off with a pep rally sending players, fans and students to Warrior field and gym to cheer on their team. Up next is the junior boy's volleyball tournament Sept. 27.

Cross-country runners are in final preparations and events for upcoming districts and hope to follow last year's provincial success in this event with the team looking successful and prepared.

Coffee row continues to review this year's harvest with thoughts shared on weather experienced and weather predicted as well as sharing stories on yields and successes. The Riders are always part of the topics on the coffee row tables. No matter at which venue you attend a coffee row session or hear the laughter from the gatherings, it is a part of our community culture that shares the stories of family, friends and neighbours. And no matter which side of the story participants sit on, they can still reconvene the next day to enjoy each other's company over a cup of coffee and some great conversation on community events and activities. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
