School division workshops on technology advances

Technology is always changing and this is very evident in the school. The days of copying work on a Gestetner are gone. The school is now full of computers, SMART Boards, iPads, photocopiers and the wireless.

Technology is always changing and this is very evident in the school. The days of copying work on a Gestetner are gone. The school is now full of computers, SMART Boards, iPads, photocopiers and the wireless.

The school division is always offering professional development opportunities to help staff keep up with the rapidly changing advances in technology. Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Stott and Ms. Gillatt attended a workshop, at the division office, on using some writing apps in the classroom. They are creative and a great tool for developing students' writing. The workshop was very informative.

The school's annual ski trip was held March 5. The weather was great and the sun shone most of the afternoon. The snow conditions at the hill were excellent and the younger students skied right up until the last minute. There was one casualty when Conner Rothenburger fell and broke his thumb. Staff wishes him a speedy recovery.

Many MCS students participated in the Radisson Skating Carnival Friday night in Radisson. The theme for the evening was Television Shows: New and Old. It brought back many memories listening to the themes from The Flintstones, Gilligan's Island and Happy Days.

Hailey Harris, Keeley Bzdel, Jocelyn Bzdel and former student Riley Baker performed solos. They were very entertaining and did an excellent job. The younger students are always so much fun to watch as they are developing their skating skills. Jayden Caldwell, a kindergarten student, participated in her first carnival and was Smurfette in one of the routines.

Jasmyn Elgersma, also kindergarten, dressed as Mary Anne from Gilligan's Island. She was named one of the CanSkate champions for giving 100 per cent all the time at lessons, practices and performances.

Cash Bzdel, Grade 1, looked very eager as Gilligan from Gilligan's Island. Monte Schmidt, Grade 1, was Sylvester the Cat, eagerly chasing after Tweety. Jasymn Harris, Grade 1, was Tweety Bird, making sure she was not caught. Jasymn received the CanSkater of the Year award.

Other students participating in the carnival were Paige Harris, Kaelee Anna Schmidt, and Hayley Schmidt. Paige and Hayley were dressed as island castaways in the show Survivor. They may not have won the million dollars, but they had fun.

Kaelee Anna Schmidt was an adorable Daffy Duck, and "That's all Folks", about the carnival. It was a nice evening and all the skaters did very well.

This past weekend, the Table Mountain Ski and Race Club hosted the Nancy Greene Festival. There were over 100 girls and boys competing from the Table Mountain Club, Regina, Qu'Appelle Valley, Wapiti and Prince Albert. MCS students who participated were: Jayden Caldwell; Emmerson, Rylan and Mckenna Voegeli; and Allison Wawryk.

In Allison's and Makenna's age group, there were 22 competitors. Allison placed seventh and Makenna placed about 11th. This was a strong group so both girls did very well. Rylan placed eighth in her age group. The youngest competitors were Jayden, who finished seventh, and Emmerson, who finished in fifth position.

Ribbons, chocolate bars and stuffed husky dogs were given out Saturday in recognition of all their achievements. They all received a medal for their efforts Sunday.

The weekend was a huge success. Dennis Wawryk received one of the Volunteer of the Year awards for his efforts. They certainly had a beautiful weekend for skiing.

Clay Ellis, a Grade 5 student, participated in a steer riding school this past weekend. He rode about 15 steers and had lots of practice. He reported it was fun but his body was really sore!

Brooke Ferris, a Grade 5 student, had a very exciting experience on the weekend. She had the opportunity to meet Hayley Wickenheiser. Brooke is a hockey player herself, so it was very exciting for her to meet a Saskatchewan-born player who has been playing for many years. Brooke had her picture taken with Hayley and was able to hold her gold medal. Brooke said the medal was very heavy and enjoyed meeting an Olympic hero.

Kelly Gray was the chairman of the local school board for many years. The staff and students would like to congratulate Kelly and Cindy on their recent marriage. They wish the couple a long and happy married life.
