Living Sky School Division school counsellors will be among those celebrating Canadian School Counselling Week Feb. 3-7.
Canadian School Counselling Week, sponsored by the School Counsellors Chapter of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, will focus public attention on the unique contribution of professional school counsellors within Canadian school systems. Canadian School Counselling Week highlights the impact school counsellors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
The special week honouring school counsellors provides recognition for school counsellors who implement comprehensive school counselling programs and are a vital part of the educational process for all students.
School counsellors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; work in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today's world; focus on positive ways to enhance students' personal, social, educational and career development; and work with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves.
Living Sky School Division employs 12 professional school counsellors offering services to 31 schools. School counsellors focus on the personal, emotional and social needs of students. The counsellor meets with students one at a time and in groups. Counselling happens during the school day in a private room in the school, and discretion is used so the student does not feel like everyone knows he or she is seeing the counsellor. A school counsellor may also give classroom presentations on certain topics, or deal with crisis intervention. Referrals can be made by principals, teachers, parents, agencies, and students.
