Norman Carter School Community Council held a family dance at the Saskcan Centre Feb. 8. The dance was a fundraiser for the Norman Carter Playground. Admission and refreshment booth profits are going towards the project with generous guests also donating at the door. This all helps with the purchase of the playground equipment for the school.

Although the dance was to start at 7 p.m., guests started arriving at 6:45 p.m., excited for the night to start and stayed until the music ended at 9:30 p.m. Newborns, grandparents, students from McLurg and even guests from Landis came out to partake in the event, most dancing all night long.

Devon Boyer of Sound Dog Entertainment, a local parent and DJ, provided the music knowing what songs would get the guests, including the children, up and moving. Over 50 families attended, finding it to be a positive experience. A few parents have already inquired when a similar event will be held, although nothing is planned at this time.

The set up and clean up was manned by SCC members and Norman Carter staff, working together to ensure a well-run event. The SCC's secretary/treasurer Ryan Kobelsky and his wife Nicole managed the admission table throughout the evening and members Joel Mann and Darren Hango looked after the booth from start to finish. Principal Shannon Ochs sends out many thanks to all of the people who came out to support the playground initiative.

"We hope you had a great time watching your children enjoy themselves dancing with their school friends".

In conjunction with World Marriage Day Feb. 10, the Wilkie Catholic Women's League hosted a fundraiser, "Weddings through the Decades," in St. James Hall. The event ran from 2-4 p.m. Sunday with approximately 115 guests in attendance. Door prizes were up for grabs, all donated by CWL members and friends.

The hall was decorated in red and white, an ode to Valentine's Day. Funds raised go to help with renovations at St. James Church.

Around 40 dresses were lent to the group to use for the day, most shown in a fashion show. Styles spanned through the decades starting in the 1930s all the way to 2012. Some dresses modeled were worn by granddaughters for their grandmothers, daughters for their mothers and others were modeled by the original bride. Sixteen girls from the high school helped model some of the dresses.

Five dresses were up on display, the two oldest from 1936 with another from 1952. Memorabilia was also available to peruse, from photos to cake toppers to wedding cakes there was plenty for the crowd to admire. The oldest photo on display was from 1906.

Guest and CWL member Agatha Weber brought her wedding cake, 25th anniversary cake and her 50th anniversary cake to display. She thought the day was beautiful. That is was a "happy note, like spring is coming." She also brought a display of some Avon products for guests to purchase with money raised also going to the church fundraiser. She will be taking orders for a couple more campaigns. If anyone is interested in placing an order to help benefit the church, feel free to contact Agatha at 306-843-2700.

The women who had a dress being shown filled out a paper with information on their dresses or stories from their weddings. This was then read by event MC and president of the CWL Pat Exley, as the corresponding outfit was modeled, with interesting pieces of knowledge being shared.

The fashion show not only consisted of the traditional dresses but of a suit as well; as it was learned that in the 1940s, suits were mainly worn as marriage outfits due to the war and the cost of things.

Desserts and refreshments were also on hand making it a wonderful day out to beat the winter blues. Exley said the day was awesome and that all of the girls did a great job.

With Teacher's Appreciation week and Valentine's Day this past week, hopefully you were able to show someone how much you appreciate them. As I write this, I am appreciating the weather and enjoying the fact that the icicles out my bay window are steadily dripping away. As long as it doesn't snow again we're laughing. But who am I kidding? This is Saskatchewan.
