H. Hardcastle School hosted the 2A boys' regional volleyball playoffs Nov. 15 and 16. There were eight teams competing for the opportunity to advance to the provincial playoffs in Hepburn. Pool A featured Edam, Lashburn, St. Walburg and Neilburg. Pool B featured Goodsoil, Hillmond, Cut Knife and Canoe Lake. Goodsoil was ranked number one coming in and the Royals were ranked number 2.
Edam played Neilburg in the first match Friday in front of a packed gym. The Royals dominated Neilburg in the first set, but had to battle hard to win the second set. The Royals cruised through their matches with St. Walburg and Lashburn finishing round robin play in first place.
In the semifinal Edam faced a determined team from Cut Knife that was riding a high from upsetting Hillmond. Cut Knife was real scrappy on defence, but the Royals proved to be too strong and won easily in two straight sets.
This set up the anticipated final between number one seed Goodsoil, and the hometown Royals. The mood in the gym was electrifying throughout the entire match. Edam got on a roll, inspired by the entire hometown cheering, and played their best match of the season upsetting Goodsoil by scores of 25-21 and 25-19. This gave the Royals the regional gold medal and the opportunity to advance to the provincial championships.
In the third place match Lashburn defeated Cut Knife. Edam, Goodsoil and Lashburn all advanced to the provincial playoffs. Thank you to everyone in the community that showed up to support the team.
There was excitement all week at school as the senior boys prepared for the provincial championships in Hepburn Nov. 22 and 23. The Royals were ranked number one in Pool B heading into the provincial championships and were ranked number two overall. After the opening ceremonies the Royals tried to settle their nerves and prepare for their first match against Kahkewistahaw. The boys lost both sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-19.
The Royals regrouped and dominated the next match, beating Lashburn with scores of 25-15 and 25-12. The last match Friday featured Edam against a very good team from Muenster. The match was close but the Royals won in two straight sets with scores of 25-23 and 25-15. Going into Saturday the Royals had a 2-1 record and needed to win against Ponteix to give them second place in Pool B heading into the playoff round. Edam came out ready to play and beat Ponteix in two straight sets with scores of 25-21 and 25-19.
The boys waited anxiously as the number one and four seeds played in the first round of the playoffs. From now on, you win or go home. They were exciting matches with Montmartre knocking off Kahkewistahaw and Goodsoil defeating Muenster.
In the next round the number two seeds played the number one seeds featuring Edam against Hazlet-Leader and Ponteix against Hepburn. The Royals lost the first set to Hazlet-Leader 25-19, but rebounded in the next two sets winning by scores of 25-15 and 25- 17. Hepburn defeated Ponteix in the other match.
This set up the final four teams in the semifinals. Edam was matched up with their rivals from Goodsoil and Hepburn was against Montmartre. The noise in the gym was deafening as all four teams battled for the opportunity to play for the gold.
Edam was still recovering a little from the tough quarter-final match and Goodsoil won the first set 25-19. Edam battled back in the second set winning 25-19. In the third set Goodsoil was able to build a commanding lead. Despite a late push from the Royals, Goodsoil hung on to win by a score of 25-20. In the other semifinal, Montmartre defeated Hepburn.
Our boys were disappointed missing out on playing for the gold, but rallied quickly and prepared to battle it out for the bronze medal with the hometown Hepburn Hawks. Both teams battled hard, not wanting to go home without a medal. Edam overcame the hometown team and took the first set 27-25. In the second set, Hepburn won 25-22. In the third and deciding set, Edam refused to lose. Everyone sacrificed their bodies on defence and played at another level defeating Hepburn 25-19, capturing the bronze medal. It was an emotional but perfect end to a gruelling tournament. This was the second straight year the senior boys have come home with a provincial medal.
