Amanda (Jason) Rempel of Borden earned her degree from the Sask. Polytechnic University of Regina nursing program with distinction Oct. 17.
Radisson Royal Purple held past HRL night Nov. 3, enjoying a meal together at a local restaurant before their meeting in the town office. At the meeting final plans were made for the annual Remembrance Day service held in Radisson Hall Nov. 11, with the Royal Purple hosting and serving lunch. Next meeting Dec. 1 will be the potluck Christmas supper and gift exchange at the home of Roberta Harris. The Christmas Tea and Bake Sale will be Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. It is also Santa Claus Day and the ladies will be busily selling grocery hamper raffle tickets with four prizes offered. The lodge cash raffle was won by Tina Hessell, Happy birthday was sung to Roberta Harris and the ladies enjoyed cake and ice cream after the meeting.
Borden School held their Remembrance Day service on Nov. 6. The walls of the gym were decorated with posters done by Grade 9 and 10 and others. After O Canada and information on why Remembrance Day is held, wreaths were laid by veteran Murray Taylor, cadet DyllanTracksell, Village of Borden Ian Tracksell, Grade 1 - Talon, Grade 2-4 - Tyler, Julia and Bill, Grade 5/6 Wyatt and Jade, Grade 7/8 - Zach and Ovi, Grade 9/10 - Rachel and Nikita and Grade 11/12 by Wyatt P. and Emma H.
Mr. Dyck read the Act of Remembrance and Last Post, minute of silence and Reveille were held. MCs McKinley Marten and Krysta Bueckert introduced the program. The Grade 1-4 class recited a poem, Grade 5/6 sang Standing Strong and True and the Grade 7/8 class recited In Flanders Fields. Grade 9/10 talked of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the war memorial in Ottawa and Rachel and Natalie recited the poem. Grade 11/12 gave excerpts from poems and stories of the different wars entitled Voices of Hope.
Shaun Dyck gave the address, citing the 100 years since the First World War in 1914. Armistice was declared Nov. 11,1918. He talked about the number of Canadians killed in the two world wars and in other wars since, how valuable our freedom is and the sacrifice of all Canadians who have served. He said we should always take time to remember them.
A Remembrance Day video set to music done by Nikita Pascoe was shown, depicting the First and Second World Wars, present day peacekeepers, armed forces and local Borden people who served our country.
The Borden Bruins senior boys held an invitational tournament at Borden Nov. 8 with teams from Langham, Hepburn, Medstead and BVW (Bellevue,Vonda, Wakaw) competing. In the semifinals, Hepburn beat Borden, taking first place. BVW was second and Borden placed third.
The seniors boys are off to Dinsmore Nov. 15 for conference 1A playoffs against Dinsmore, Beechy and Davidson. The senior girls played in Saskatoon Nov. 8 in conference 1A finals against Perdue, Cudworth and Saskatoon Legacy Christian, who placed first and advance to regionals.
In Curl Sask Q playoffs in Saskatoon at the CN Club Nov. 7-9, Dallas Burnett's team won four games, lost one and played in the semi finals Sunday. They lost out to the Springer team. On the team are lead Eric Westad, second Andrew Derksen and third Tyler Camm. Dallas, Eric and Andrew are all in Grade 12 at Borden School.
Condolences to the family of Gertrude Sherman of Maymont, who passed away Oct. 29 at the age of 96, and whose service was at the Maymont United Church Nov. 8. Leo Monselor officiated and Valerie Gray was organist, with lunch at the Maymont School gym. Gertie, who collected oil cans over the years, had gathered up more than 300 and was featured in the magazine More of Our Canada. Gertie also bowled at Borden Action Bowl in her late 80s and early 90s, so many of us bowled with her
