Royal Purple of Canada defunct, Radisson Lodge changes affiliation

Radisson Royal Purple No. 347 met Jan. 5 in the Radisson town office with five members present. As of Dec. 31, 2014, the Royal Purple of Canada no longer exists and Lodges either joined the Canadian Royal Purple Society or could join the Elks Association. Radisson chose to join the Canadian RPS and still carry on their commitment to the local communities.

The ladies approved new bylaws and rules of order to send into headquarters. At the meeting $50 was donated to the Hafford Music Festival. Happy Birthday was sung to Linda Yuskiw and Lorraine Olinyk, January celebrants, and the Lodge raffle was won by Lorraine.

The Lodge decided to again sponsor the Elks and Royal Purple poster, literary and video contest. The theme this year is Healthy Choices – Keeping Our Brain Healthy. The deadline to get the material to Radisson Lodge is March 31.

The provincial prize money is going directly to the students this year with no added bonus going to the sponsoring schools. Senior and intermediates get $250 for first, $150 for second and $125 for third, while juniors get $150, $125 and $100 and primary and beginners get $100, $75 and $50. There is also a small cash prize, treat and certificates from Radisson Lodge.

With Ms. J. Corbett on maternity leave, kindergarten and Grade 1 at Borden School have a new teacher, Shannon Begrand.

Borden School Community Council is sponsoring a breakfast program twice a month. The dates in January are Jan. 13 and 27. Hopefully members of the community will help out serving or baking muffins. There is a hot lunch Jan. 14, hosted by Grades 2, 3 and 4.

The senior girls’ basketball team was in a tournament at Hepburn Jan. 9 and 10 and won the event against Hepburn, Hague and Delisle. The team is hosting Hafford Jan. 15.

There are three senior teams curling – one boys’ and two mixed teams – and they practise in Radisson on Wednesdays.

High school students write final exams Jan. 26 to 29 and there are no classes Jan. 30.

Borden Lions’ scholarship deadline for applicants is fast approaching. Full-time post-secondary students who have graduated from Borden or Langham schools, are in a post-secondary education program for at least two years and have successfully completed one year have until Jan. 23 to get their application in to Lions John Buswell, Sharon Assman or Wendell Dyck.

An upcoming event at Borden is the firefighters’ snowmobile rally Jan. 24, if there is enough snow; otherwise the alternate date is Feb. 7. Registration starts at 10 a.m. at the Borden Hall, last rider out by 2 p.m. and in by 5 p.m. There are two courses, a checkpoint with free hotdogs and hot chocolate courtesy of Borden Co-op, a hamburger/chili meal from noon on, a 50/50, bar and many prizes. Riders’ fee is $20 or $25 with the meal. The meal is $10 for non-riders. Call Scott, 306- 241-2884, or Jamie, 306-997-2222 for more information.

The Borden Community Centre Preservation Committee is holding a Valentine’s dinner show at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 14 with Eileen Laverty entertaining at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at local businesses for $25 in advance, $30 at the door.

The Borden Lions and Borden School are holding a noon luncheon theatre in the community centre Feb. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with the students entertaining while you enjoy your soup and sandwiches.
