Royal Purple Day celebrated with perfect attendance pins

Radisson Royal Purple held their annual Royal Purple Day tea June 4 with 43 guests out to enjoy strawberry shortcake and beverages.

An official opening of Borden Museum was held during Diefenbaker Days. The flag was raised then lowered to half-mast to show respect for RCMP officers killed in New Brunswick. Taking part in the ceremony were museum board members Heather Silcox, Helen Sutherland, Karen Kerr and Darlene Penner, summer student Bailee Davies, MLA Randy Weekes, MP Kelly Block and Mayor David Buckingham.

Entertainment for the afternoon was Jackie Meister playing the piano and Gerald Wiebe singing songs, including his own Centennial Song. A few games of bingo were played. Door prizes or bingo prizes brought by the members were awarded to 31 guests.

Perfect attendance pins were awarded to RP members: Audrey Baker - 10 years, Linda Yuskiw - 15 years, Tina Hessell - 20 years, Roberta Harris - 26 years and Lorraine Olinyk - 38 years.

Graduating at the University of Saskatchewan spring convocation in May from the College of Agriculture were: Alison M. Sutherland of Borden in animal science, Earl C. Kieper of Fielding in agronomy with distinction and Melanie N. Hawrysh of Hafford in agronomy with great distinction.

Borden has a new website, www.bordensask.ca. The main designers were Dallas Burnett and Emma Pidwerbesky along with others helping out. Check it out for what is happening in Borden.

Borden School held its awards night June 3, preceded by a barbecue served by the SRC with the help of Pam Pidwerbesky and Tony Martens. After O Canada and the principal's remarks, scholarships were handed out.

The $500 Affinity Credit Union Scholarship went to Avery Fairbrother and Myron Metanchuk, $800 William H. Johnston to Deidre Hebig and Avery Fairbrother and the $500 Lions one had gone to Tyrell Sargent earlier. Educational involvement certificates were given to Elise Meister and Sonia Sutherland, and the Community Service Award to Celeste Lumgair. The Library Service Award went to the school library club and the yearbook award to Myron Metanchuk and Kayla Knorr.

The Governor General Award for 2013 went to Robynn Pidwerbesky, who had an average of 90.8 per cent.

The Marafun run for Grade 8 and under ran for two months and awards went to Owen Dyck and Liam Faith, with certificates to Special Olympic athletes Max Gader and Celeste.

Most deserving athletic awards went to Danika Pidwerbesky and Natalie Anderson in junior girls' volleyball, Dallas Burnett in curling, Connor Wainwright for senior boys' volleyball, Emma Rose Pidwerbesky for senior girls' basketball, Natalie Anderson and Rachel Sutherland in junior badminton, Emma Rose and Wyatt Piprell in senior badminton, Danika for junior track, Emma Rose for senior track, Carson Derksen for elementary cross-country, Brooke Brazeau for junior cross-country and Brooklyn Gader for senior cross-country.

The Athletes of the Year were juniors Rachel Sutherland and Clayton Weibe and seniors Emma Rose and Connor Wainwright. Congratulations were extended to the 21 out of 27 athletes in track and field who went on to districts and to the four who went to provincials - Emma Pidwerbesky, Brooklyn Gader, Eric Westad and Duncan Sutherland.

Citizenship plaques went to Anna Gough in K-1, Wyatt Dyck in Grades 2-4, Zach Martens in Grades 5-6, Danika in Grades 7-9 and Emma Prescesky in Grades 10-12. Leadership awards went to Bently Burletoff in K-1, Sadie Funk in 2-4, Carson Derksen in 5-6, the Royal Purple Award to Natalie Anderson in Grade 7-9 and Dallas Burnett in 10-12.

In academics, the most improved students getting medals were Tyler Barth in K-1, Mikaylal Peeteetuce in 2-4, James Jamieson in 5-6 and Tianna Chase-Desjarlais in 7-8.

Students achieving honour roll, which requires an average of 80-89 per cent, were Clayton Wiebe, Mackinley Gader, Krysta Bueckert, Mckinley Martens, Cole Sutherland, Wyatt Piprell, Justin Barth, Duncan Sutherland, Emma Prescesky, Andrew Derksen and Connor Wainwright. Those with an average of 90 per cent or above were named to the honour roll with distinction: Brooke Brazeau, Danika Pidwerbesky, Kirsten Szwydky, Rachel Sutherland, Natalie Anderson, Graham Sargent, Aidan Loessin, Brooklyn Gader, Emma Pidwerbesky, Dallas Burnett, Avery Fairbrother, Deidre Hebig and Myron Metanchuk.

In Grades 7 - 12, the students with the highest averages were: Grade 7 - Brooke Brazeau, Grade 8 - Kirsten Szwydky, Grade 9 - Mckinley Martens, Grade 10 - Aidan Loessin, Grade 11 - Emma Pidwerbesky and Grade 12 - Deidre Hebig.

Mr. Broughton thanked all those who had helped to make the night a success, and the individuals and businesses who sponsored the awards.

Diefenbaker Days at Borden were held June 7 and 8, with a parade Saturday morning, the official flag raising and opening of the museum, slo-pitch for two days, Kids' Zone at the sports grounds with bouncy castles and a petting zoo and a steak supper Saturday. Epic entertained on a chilly Saturday night.

Two 50/50 draws were held. Winning $205 June 7 was Gloria Derbowka. The $290 prize for June 8 was not claimed. The winning ticket was a red ticket, number 136335. The holder has 30 days to claim the money. Please bring your ticket to the Borden village office.

In slo-pitch, with 14 teams entered, the A side winner was a Borden team -All Scars defeating Back Door Sliders. On the B side, One Hit Wonder won over the Barley Brew Crew and the C side was won by Team Blurr over The Merchants.

At the museum opening, Wyatt Piprell played the trumpet for O Canada. Heather Silcox welcomed everyone, introduced the board members present and summer student Brianne Davies.

MP Kelly Block brought greetings from the Government of Canada, and MLA Randy Weekes from Brad Wall and the Saskatchewan government. Mayor David Buckingham also spoke. All gave credit to the many volunteers who work so tirelessly to preserve the history of the area. David raised the flag, then brought it down to half-mast to honour the fallen RCMP officers. The board served free ice cream and beverages to about 50 people.

The parade was led by the fire chief in the new truck equipped for grass fires, followed by the rescue van and RCMP Cpl. Gary Pepin. The Comb Trac Salvage truck pulled Jam Band, composed of Avery Fairbrother, Jamie Brandrick and Gabriel Lavoie. Dignitaries Kelly and Milton Block, Randy Weekes, Mayor Dave Buckingham and his wife Karen followed.

There were two classic cars - Matt Fairbrother's 1958 Pontiac and Graham Derbowka's 1957 Meteor. Floats were Model T Bar & Grille, Affinity Credit Union, Gas Plus, Borden Co-op and Block's Agencies. The Borden Museum float was pulled by Sutherland's Farmall H tractor. There were horse-drawn democrats belonging to Brad and Gay Funk, with his grey Percherons, Ken and Pat Crush with their black Percheron/quarter horse cross team and Nancy Black with her miniature ponies. Cory Funk drove his go-cart and Delbert Enns rode his scooter. Frank Block drove his MH 44 pony pulling an eighth size replica of a MM threshing machine.

Closing out the parade were the fire truck, water truck and Borden's new Kubota tractor and mower.
