The Rotary Club of the Battlefords annually sponsors eight local high school students to attend Rotary weekend camps in Alberta.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Experience weekend is a four-day leadership workshop designed to enhance leadership skills and provide networking opportunities for the students. May 1 to 4, Andrea Ornawka and Kylie Elmer (NBCHS) and Michael Iverson and Jesse Schmidt (JPII) travelled to the camp at Westlock, Alta., one hour northwest of Edmonton.

One of the students said it was "an amazing experience. It is something I will take with me into the future and hopefully use it to make a difference in our community and around the world."

The Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment camp took place west of Edmonton May 7 to 11. RYPEN is an intensive five-day program of self-discovery, through seminars, speakers and physical activities, focused on helping young people develop their self-confidence, self-motivation and goal-setting skills. Attending this year was Kasia Kipp and Riley Kiskotagen (NBCHS) and Meghan-Nicole Morin and Ashton Bloom (JPII).

Comments made after the weekend include "it changed my life", "it was an opportunity to open up to people and feel comfortable with others without being judged."

The students made a presentation May 26 to the Rotary Club meeting at the Northland Power Curling Centre, where they spoke enthusiastically about their camp experiences.
