Unity Western Days seemed to be back on track as all avenues of the weekend appeared to have fared well.
Friday night's Citizen of the Year banquet, celebrity cow ride hat sale and dance following were all well attended. The annual parade saw an increase in floats and renewed enthusiasm for parade participation. Saturday afternoon's rodeo performance had the stands close to full and offered plenty of excitement.
Asking around the crowd their reasons for attending the rodeo, answers were received such as: "I come for the food;" "The mini donuts are the best!" "It's affordable family fun;" "It's something different to see and do in Unity;" "We're here to cheer on a contestant;" "I only came for the celebrity bull ride;" "It's tradition for us to come to the rodeo;" "I came for a little rodeo to get me in the mood for the rodeo dance."
Whatever reason people came, they were sure to witness plenty of thrills and spills. Although the sky threatened rain throughout Saturday's performance nothing fell until after the rodeo was over. One badly injured rider was evacuated by ambulance. One pick-up man got a surprise when his horse decided he was tired of 3,000 pound bulls running at him and chose to do a little bucking himself.
Brian Woytiuk even participated in the timed events when the announcer chose to time his grooming of the barrel racing event.
The small committee of eight includes Terry Smith, Brian Woytiuk, Bryce Woytiuk, Brent and Twila Zunti, Sheldon Mettlewsky, Deryl Richards, Mary Ann Gaetz and Brian Craig. Twila also competed in ladies' barrel racing.
