Rock music, intense art and a ladies' night out

The evening of Wednesday, May 8, check out The Basement at Portabella's in North Battleford for a homecoming of sorts. WillHorse, a southern rock band out of Golden, B.C., is on a cross-Canada tour in support of its new record and will be making a stop in North Battleford. Two members of WillHorse are from the Battlefords - Jeremy Borschneck, guitar and vocals, and Branden Winterholt, lead guitar and vocals. Rounding out the band are Nick Petrowich, drums and vocal, and Todd Menzies, bass. The show starts at 9 p.m. They'd be glad to see you!

Thursday, May 9 is the first day of "A Dynamic Three Day Art Retreat" at the Chapel Gallery. Featuring three established Saskatchewan artists, Dean Bauche, Darrell Baschak and Jam Layh. You can expect to cover essential concepts in a long list, including oil, acrylic, watercolour, portraits, landscapes, still life, pallet knife, lost edge, scrubbed grounds, colour theory, and so on and so on To register call 306-445-1760. Beginners and advanced artists are welcome.

Friday, May 10, it's Ladies' Night! Lend A Paw Animal Rescue is hosting Paws in the City at the Western Development Museum. It will include appetizers and a fashion shop as well as a silent auction. And there will be a "swag bag for every lady." It's by advance ticket only, so call 306-937-3677 if you haven't yet got your ticket.

This is Mental Health Week. One of the events scheduled for the week is a Walk for Mental Health Thursday that will begin at the Saskatchewan Hospital and proceed to the North Battleford Legion where the CMHA Battlefords Branch, Portage Vocational Society and Edwards Society will host a Spring Fling Celebration with hotdogs, refreshments, cake and entertainment. Everyone is welcome. Thursday will also see bake sales being held at both the Frontier and Territorial Place malls from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. sponsored by the Edwards Society.

The week wraps up Saturday with the fourth annual Champions of Mental Health Gala. See the story announcing the winners inside.

Also at the Dekker Centre Saturday is a light opera presentation of The Magic Flute by Mozart, presented by Saskatoon Opera. Organized by the Battleford Historic Opera House Fundraising Committee it's another step toward refurbishing the Opera House. There will also be entertainment introducing vocalist Falynn Prystupa, and the three artistes from the aforementioned art retreat will be on hand to create a piece of art on the site.

On Sunday, May 12, don't forget your mom. There will be a Mother's Day Chicken Supper, but it's by advance ticket only. Call the Third Avenue United Church at 306-445-8171.
