Road and weather conditions frustrating for travellers

Good grief, how did it get to be mid-January already? It seems like we were just enjoying Christmas. I know one thing I haven't been enjoying, and that's winter.

Good grief, how did it get to be mid-January already? It seems like we were just enjoying Christmas.

I know one thing I haven't been enjoying, and that's winter. These wild variations in temperatures from minus "a whole bunch" to nearly plus temperatures, accompanied by variations in intense snow or freezing rain, is mind-boggling, and frustrating when travelling. I am hoping a new year will bring a brighter winter forecast for us all.

Following a plentiful month of community events and activities and all the fun and fellowship that Christmas season brings, we have turned over the calendar to start all over again.

Although a disappointment for Unity to not be included in the January Grey Cup tour, folks can head to Macklin, North Battleford or Kindersley to see the Grey Cup accompanied by several players making the tour.

The schools were back in classes Jan. 6 following a nice, extended Christmas break. The new year for them will bring a continuance of basketball season and resumption of curling season, as well as numerous other activities.

The high school will be preparing students for semester exams. For Grade 12 students, this is the last leg of the journey in high school putting them on the path to graduation in just six short months.

You will want to be sure to check the weekly schedule hanging at the arena for what's coming up at the rink. This schedule includes public skating times. You can also view the schedule on the Town of Unity website. It's a good place to come watch live hockey action, enjoy the flavours and aromas offered from the booth or just visit with a friend or neighbour who happens to be there.

The curling club heads into the new year with a full slate of action upcoming. The Affinity Credit Union Senior Men's and Women's Provincial Championships will be held right here in Unity Feb. 18 to 25. Organizers are still looking for some volunteers so be sure to give the curling club a call if you are interested, 306-228-2212. A variety of volunteer positions are open including driving teams to and from their hotels to the curling arena. The annual JayDee AgTech Men's Bonspiel and Bramiche Farms Ladies' Bonspiel will also be held at the club in upcoming weeks.

The annual wildlife dinner is coming up in February. Stay tuned for details on this event. In addition to a spectacular meal prepared by wildlife committee members, the evening consists of awards and fellowship.

Although it's early, you will want to mark March 3 on your calendar as that will be the annual Celebrate Unity gala evening to recognize business, individuals and groups within the community. The event includes a supper, program and entertainment for the value price of only $35. Watch for more details on this upcoming community event.

Coffee row can rest and get back to the basics after conversations about all of the activities that took place in our community over the holidays. Resumption of schedules and routines seems to be a welcome addition to everyone's life. Coffee row folks never fail to remind each other about all the events upcoming. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
