Unity's dog park celebrated a first anniversary Sept. 24 with an evening at the park and demonstrations by the dog agility team.

Well there are still some folks trying to get their harvest completed so we will continue to hope and pray for the weather to co-operate through to their completion of this important task at this time of year. But, so far, this fall has been a continuation of the terrific weather we experienced all summer.

Delta Co-op is excited to host Saskatchewan Roughriders, Tearrrius George and Brent Hawkins, coming to their location Oct. 1. In addition to their arrival, the store is putting on a tailgate party so come out and meet the Riders, have a meal and enjoy the atmosphere. Proceeds from the barbecue are earmarked for the War Amps.

UCHS held their annual Welcome Week activities and had much fun doing so. Volleyball and football are now heavy into their seasons. The Warriors football team hosted Biggar Thursday of Welcome Week and came up just short of a win. The team will host their last home game this Friday before their schedule takes them on the road for the remainder of the season, so come out and support the Unity Warriors football team.

The senior girls' Warriors volleyball team hosted their home tournament but struggled against some strong opposition and lost out in the bronze medal game to earn fourth place. Justin Wood, UCHS golfer, was at provincial competition last weekend in Prince Albert and the school is proud to have another provincial bronze medallist in their midst. Congratulations, Justin.

Sylvan Lake Hockey camp is coming up too, held here each year near the end of October. The arena will be super busy this winter as there were multiple teams made up from the mass of registrations filed in early September. All divisions from initiation to peewee will host two teams. The bantams will ice one team and the midgets will have both a midget A team as well as a midget AA team coming off their league win last year.

Group test and STARSkate registration night is Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. in the rink lobby. This set of skating registrations for group test and STARSkate has an information session so it is mandatory that the parent and skater are both present.

A further call has gone out for one councillor position in Unity that was not filled. Running for mayor are incumbent Sylvia Maljan and newcomer Ken Rudniski. Newcomers Terry Flaherty and Brian Vanderlinde will also take on council seats this term.

The Paw Park, Unity's new off-leash dog park, held their first anniversary on a beautiful fall evening Sept. 24. Agility dogs were there to entertain visitors as well as people being able to stroll around and admire the facility. With about 24 people on hand, over a dozen dogs and gorgeous warm fall weather to boot, the evening can be considered a success. Congratulations to this group for their efforts in bringing this newest park to light as it took many volunteer hours in fundraising and construction to bring the project to completion.

Coffee row folks are still talking about those Riders; they never cease to surprise us. Another big game against another big team, their efforts at home against Calgary was another victory for the team as they answered Coach Chamblin's call for a guarantee from the D-line. The NHL lockout is still a bone of contention amongst many with the ridiculous battle between players and owners over 3.3 billion .There is much activity coming up in the community this month, so "rowers" will have plenty of topics to discuss ahead ... So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week ...
