It's the weekend of truth for Unity. The top three winners in the Richardson Pioneer sponsored Rider Nation Community Celebration Contest will be announced Sept. 14 and Unity expects to be named. Although it appeared we were behind a little in votes, the promote-the-vote contest offering many prizes and the unending commitment and enthusiasm of community folks are sure to lead us to the winner's circle. Keep your ears open for details to come.

It's back to school time and for some it's too soon; others eagerly awaited it. Be extra careful in those school zones as distracted and busy students head back to classes.

St. Peter's School reported 150 students, somewhat down from last year but accounted for by a large Grade 6 class heading off to high school and several families moving away. The kindergarten class, which started Sept. 4, had 24 kids registered.

Unity Public School was reporting 215 kids from pre-K to Grade 6 and that is up slightly from last year with the addition of some new families.

UCHS had 35 grads move out of the school but it didn't negatively affect their enrolment as they now stand at 242, including the U-Tech students which gives them a plus-seven registration number from last year.

This totals 607 students attending school in Unity. Busy schools stand for busy, youthful communities which is something residents say they are glad to see.

Don't forget fresh garden produce, baking, farm fresh eggs and much more is available at the farmers market Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m. Come to the Adanac Hall at the museum and get some homemade, fresh, organic treats for your table.

"Mount Goldsworthy" has been born from the excavation of the former tennis courts, preparing the site for the new swimming pool. Kids have been having a ball playing on the newly formed hill in the regional park. Residents can now see a full force construction zone where the old tennis courts used to be.

It's football season in Unity and coming up is Unity Minor Football Day, Sept. 21. Minor Football Day gives players a chance to celebrate the game of football, with flag and tackle games going all day long. The tackle teams will play some teams that are not in their league so it's a great opportunity to showcase their skills while playing a game they love. It's a great event for parents, siblings, grandparents and friends to come out and enjoy as it includes a food booth and some great prizes in addition to live football action.

The fifth annual Candace Heitt Memorial Run takes place Sunday at the Unity golf course. Organizers are excellent at giving participants a terrific experience, combined with the beautiful landscape of the Unity golf course, in honour and memory of Candace Heitt. Proceeds from each year's event go toward the paving of pathways in Unity and the UCHS bursary.

Don't forget the Terry Fox Run which takes place each year in September to raise money for cancer research. This year the run in Unity will be Sept. 22. Pledge sheets can be picked up at Unity Credit Union. If you need more information, you can contact Val Middleton at 306-228-4536.

The annual fall fair and trade show is coming up so book your booth if you haven't already done so. They will also be looking for your best treats to compete with others in the community in the fair portion of the event.

Raise the Woof fundraiser to benefit KC Rescue will be held Oct. 4 at Bluez on 2nd. Advance tickets are only $15 for this stand-up comedy show that also will include draws and a silent auction. Tickets can be purchased at Bluez or call 306-228-2583.

Coffee row conversation has so many topics that are hot and heavy, they hardly know where to start. The Riders certainly start the conversation with the surprise upset at the Banjo Bowl; however fans are still behind their 8-2 team wholeheartedly. A busy harvest season and weather predictions also keep the discussion tables going. Now that September has begun there is always a full slate of activities to discuss and review. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
