Travelling with her brother Jim Dolittle and sister-in-law, Dolores of Flaxcombe, Arlee Lumgain returned March 7 from a two-month motor trip that took them to many interesting places in the United States. Leaving Jan. 5, they travelled south to the American border then west to Washington State and the west coast and southward to California and the Gulf of Mexico. A month of their time was spent on Padre Island in the gulf.

As you can well imagine they travelled through many scenic spots: deserts, canyon land, forests including a petrified forest, mountainous country and vast grass lands. They witnessed the drought that is being suffered in the south central U.S. states and has been ongoing for many years.

Their month long stay on Padre Island was a time of relaxation. They enjoyed good weather for most of their trip returning to mountains of snow at home.

March 10, I spent an interesting time listening to the young people who were speakers at the annual District No. 35 4-H public speaking event that was held in the Waseca Hall. They are all to be congratulated. I am always amazed at the variety of topics chosen by the speakers and their delivery.

A large crowd of parents, friends and 4-H members were in attendance to hear the young people, who are to be congratulated for their work in planning and taking part in this very worthwhile part of the 4-H movement. The afternoon included a quick lunch provided by the Maidstone Gully 4-H Club. Everyone enjoyed a time of visiting as well.
