The theme for this week has been remembrance. Elementary students wrote essays and drew posters to hang in the gym during the Remembrance Day Service. Bulletin boards were created to honour the veterans and service people who fought in the wars.
The annual Remembrance Day service started at 10:45 a.m. in the school gym Nov. 10. Students and staff entered the gym quietly and were all adorned with a bright red poppy. Many community members were also in attendance.
Following the singing of O Canada, the Grades 2 to 5 choir sang two selections — One Wish and Shine A Light For Peace. The famous poem, In Flanders Fields, was read by Carlee Hamilton and Patience Brown. Several videos were shown and then the service of remembrance was observed.
Community members and students laid wreaths and poppies to honour family members who served our country. Candles were lit by students to show their respect.
Justin Whitehead , Grade 11, read the poem, They Gave Up Their Tomorrow, So We Could Have Today by Florence Nobel. The service concluded with the singing of God Save The Queen.
Special thanks to Sandra Large and Wanda Gillatt for organizing the service.
Lunch was available after the service from the Grade 12 graduating class.
A pie throw was held in the gym at noon Monday as part of the incentive program for the fundraising project. Cassidy Serhienko and Carlee Hamilton graciously volunteered to receive the pies in the face.
The SLC is sponsoring a Remembrance Day poster contest. After the posters have been used for the service, they will be given to the SLC members to be judged.
Operation Christmas Child boxes were filled by the different classrooms and will be sent to needy children around the world.
