The students of H. Hardcastle School held their Remembrance Day service on the afternoon of Nov. 6. The service began with the entrance of the flag-bearers, Jesse Cadrain and Anthony Cole, escorting the honoured members of the Edam Legion. MC Brittany Bec began by calling on the Grade 1 and 2 classes to lead the singing of the national anthem.
Throughout the service the winners of last year's poem and essay contest were called forward to read their entries. These winners were Clayton Wolfe, Jade Cole, Macey Levasseur, Cordell Beynon and Zachary Gordon.
Other musical contributions were Grades 2 and 10 singing "What shall I do with these hands of mine" and Macey Levasseur singing Highway of Heroes. Clayton Wolfe played Amazing Grace and The Battle Hymn of Republic on his accordion.
Following The Last Post, the minute of Silence and The Reveille, wreaths were laid on the monument by Grade 12 - Sabrina Cadrain, Grade 11 - Treyden Brennan, Grade 10 - Brittany Nedelec, Grade 9 - Courtenay Fudge, Grade 8 - Brennan Seipp, Grade 7 - Jordan Rowlands, Grade 6 - Haylee Olson, Grade 5 - Chandler Levasseur, Grade 4 - Randi Carr, Grade 3 - Nate Poole, Grade 2 - Brook Mack, Grade 1 - Ashton Harty and Kiana Weber, kindergarten - Heidi Russett and Madison Mack, staff - Mr. Darren Nordell, school community council - Mrs. Glenda Weber, RCMP - Cst. Rayside, Royal Canadian Legion - Judy Carignan.
The service closed with the playing of the video, A Pittance In Time, by Terry Kelly. The flag-bearers then led the honoured guests out of the gym.
A full house at the Legion in Edam came together Nov. 11 at 10:30 a.m. to honour the soldiers who fought and are still fighting to maintain the freedoms that we enjoy. Rev. Kuhn Kim led the singing of the national anthem. This was followed by the reading of In Flanders Fields by Huguette MacGregor. Pastor Dave Walker led the prayer of Remembrance. Huguette MacGregor then led the congregation in the singing of the hymn Let There Be Peace on Earth. Pastor Dave Walker read the scripture which was followed by the message given by Rev. Peter.
Following Taps, silence and Reveille, the laying of the wreaths took place. On behalf of the government - Judy Carignan, local government - Louis McCaffrey, Legion - Myrna Head, and any others who wished - Evelyn Cooper. There also was an honour guard this year. Representing the Knights of Columbus were Maurille Corbeil and Guy Corbeil. The service was brought to a close with a delicious lunch being served.
The handi-van committee held their second bingo of the season Nov. 14. This month the prizes were chickens with two hampers for the blackout games. Winners were as follows: Teta Harty twice, Hazel Mosimann, Jean Pollard twice, Annette Blaquiere, Margo Young-Brewster, Huguette MacGregor twice and Huguette Johnson. Winning both hampers was Huguette MacGregor.
This month the kids' prizes were donated by Bonnie Letwinetz and won by Jaycee Letwinetz and Zaiden Pollard. The next bingo will be held Dec. 12.
