TISDALE — This year’s Terry Fox run saw community members marching for those they lost to cancer and hoping to raise money for a cure.
The walk took place on Sept. 16.
“I’m walking in honour of my sister, Raelene, who walked this many times in her last five years,” said Heather Whitelaw, one of the walkers in attendance. “I actually didn’t get the chance to walk with her, so this year I’m going to walk in memory of her.”
Raelene Ann Franklin-Kohle died on July 31, due to cancer. She was an active member in the community through the Kinettes, and in May 2017 was awarded a lifetime membership with the organization. Rae’s Action Skate Park was named after her.
“One of the biggest messages I get from people when they’re sending their condolences is that she was such a beautiful, joyful person who was just kind to everyone,” Whitelaw said. “You wanted to do better and be better in your life because of her.”
Jessica Steadman is another walker who took part for similar reasons.
“Well, I’ve had a lot of friends and family touched by cancer. Unfortunately we just lost a friend to cancer this summer, so we’re walking in her honour today,” Steadman said. “Thankfully I have a father who is a cancer survivor, so I celebrate that today too. I’m just here for my friends and family and to be there for my friends and family who are feeling the same way that I am today.”
Steadman would like to see more community members out and supporting it in the future.
“I think that this is a very important event,” Steadman said. “It’s historically been around for so long, and that others should support it as well because together maybe we can hope to have better outcomes for people who have cancer diagnoses.”
For people with cancer, Steadman wants them to know they stand in support of them.
“We’re all here for them and we give them our su pport, and we want them to have positive outcomes and wish the best.”
The walk saw around 60 community members, 19 of those Tisdale Trojan hockey team members who came to give their support.
