EAST CENTRAL — With the end of summer comes the start of community activities and sports like minor hockey leagues and taekwondo classes.

Local communities all over the region are working to get the word out about new opportunities with their community wide registration nights.

For Humboldt residents, the City Wide Registration and Volunteer Appreciation barbecue will feature information booths from 25 different community programs, most of which focus on programming for young members of the community.

The fall registration event also focuses on thanking volunteers for everything they do to keep community programs running smoothly, said Michelle Stevenson with Humboldt’s Community and Leisure Services Department.

“If you volunteered doing anything all year long, you’re more than welcome to attend, and have a burger or a smokie.”

With the Humboldt Fire Department moving into the Humboldt Curling Club, Stevenson said the registration night will be moved into Jubilee Hall for this year.

Around 15 booths are expected at Tisdale’s Community Wide Registration night. Lesley Thibault, the town’s recreation director, said they have a wide array of booths at the events with sports organizations and adult volunteer organizations coming to promote their programs and the work they do in the community.

All ages are welcome to visit Melfort’s Community Connections and Registration Night with 35 booths showcasing a variety of programs across the city. Brent Lutz, the city’s community relations director said they have expanded this year’s event to include any organizations that are looking for new members or new volunteers.

“Hopefully it‘ll allow these groups to better fulfill their objectives in finding volunteers and new members.”

Chelsea Corrigan, Nipawin’s recreation director, said the have around 20 to 30 arts, culture, and recreation booths attending their registration event with organizations for adults and many children’s sports programs.

“It’s a good time for everybody to come out and get their kids registered and see what Nipawin has to offer.”

Even if community organizations are moving to online registration; a steady tread over the last few years, all event organizers agree that the registration nights offer residents a chance to look for new programs to try.

“It’s a good opportunity for people to see what the city has to offer and talk to these groups and browse; maybe find something new that they might be interested in,” Stevenson said.

Lutz sees these events as a win-win for both residents and groups.

“People are able to go and ask questions, talk to the people that are involved in these organizations and, on the other hand, organizations are better able to explain exactly the programs that they are running.”

While she was seeing groups move to online registration, Thibault said she still encourages groups to come out and make themselves known to the public.

“They are always new people that are possibly entering into our community that are unaware of what kind of extracurricular activities are available.”

Registration is still open for these community wide events. Organizations looking to register can visit the town websites or call the town offices.
