The recreation board for the RM of Glenside held their first meeting of the new 2014 season at the home of Andrea Owen of Spinney Hill. Members attended from the three districts of Lizard Lake, Baljennie and Spinney Hill. All of the last season's paperwork and cheques have been completed. A new season starts with the annual grant money received. New donations were made to the Maymont Dance Club, Sonningdale Quilting Seniors, Biggar Diamond Lodge, Ranger Lake Bible Camp, Monarch 4-H Club, Lizard Lake Ladies in Motion classes and the children's festival in North Battleford. The remaining funds go to a craft class at a later date in Baljennie. Arrangements are in the process. More details at a later date. All the cheques were wrote out and gone out to all the donated groups. The next meeting will be held on Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Irene Greer of Baljennie.

Sympathy goes out to the Grove family on the recent passing of Marlene Grove of Willowmoore. She was 81 years old. Marlene had a family of two children when she married David Grove. Funeral will be held at Battleford United Church and burial at a later date at the Willowmoore Cemetery.

Also we were saddened to hear the passing of George Domes of Biggar, formerly of the Lizard Lake area. George and his wife Martha retired from the farm a few years ago to make their retirement home in Biggar. Donnie his son and family took over the farm until Donnie suddenly passed away in 2011. Now the farm has been partly rented out. Pasture and feed land was kept for the younger family to continue raising their Charolais cow-calf operations.

We would like to bid farewell to our friends Andy and Peggy Gretter of Sonningdale (Spinney Hill) on their recent move to Mankota, closer to their daughter Cathy and family. Andy moved into a senior home in Mankota due to health problems and Peggy is living in a little house close by. Peggy was born and raised and went to school at Spinney Hill along with two sisters. She went to work at Val Marie where she met Andy Gretter and got married. They both moved back to the Spinney Hill area where they ranched and farmed. They had a family of two children. Good luck, Andy and Peggy, in your new homes.

Recently burning some garbage at the Glenn and Eileen Peters farm yard turned into a much larger fire when it spread to a vacant house trailer owned by Candy and Derek. No one was living in the trailer.

Stanley Mills took in the antique tractor meeting held at the Western Development Museum in North Battleford April 14. Neil Milman and his crew of interested tractor people are trying to get some of the older antique tractors in running condition for the upcoming summer events, mainly for Those Were The Days Aug. 9 and 10. A good number of volunteers turned out to the meeting. More work days and meetings are being planned soon. They are open for all the volunteers they can get. Anyone interested contact the Western Development Museum office.

Is spring here or not? For many days light snow has been in the forecast. We did get a little to make the ground white, but soon will melt away. There are been a few April showers ahead. The winter snow and even most of the drifts has melted. There was no runoff in this area. It all soaked into the dry soil. Easter was late this year and it has resulted in a late spring. It would be nice to see more warmer sunshine to get green grass growing and leaves on the trees. Even the little birds are taking their time to arrive. There have been a few brave ones about, but they look cold.

It has been chilly for those who have baby calves arriving. There has also been a problem with coyotes and the ravens bothering the baby calves. Cattleman are trying to keep control on them. Their work includes constant checking on the animals day and night.

Just the night before the fall moon April 14 there was a total eclipse of the moon at midnight. Cloudy conditions kept it from full view. It lasted a few hours.

The school bus will be idle for the Easter spring break, the last long break before the end of June.

I'm a little late but would like to wish all my readers a Happy Easter. It has been a cool few days for the Easter bunny and all his friends.
