Recreation board reorganizes

Yards and garden are keeping residents busy, the wet summer has promoted lots of weed growth and the grass needs frequent cutting. It is good to see the village lily and perennial beds thriving.

Former residents passing through often take a drive around the village to see the changes. Randy Goodridge, a former long-time resident was a visitor in the village July 1. He had not visited Waseca since 2005 so saw changes. Helena Pike enjoyed a visit with him. He is presently working in Edmonton.

The Waseca Recreation Board held a reorganization meeting on the evening of June 26. The new slate of officers includes Rodney Weisner as president, Ron Hult as vice-president, Lesley Gray as secretary-treasurer and board members, Walter and Ross Campbell, Curtis Sutherland and Roger Haugard.

Members of the Broadhead family enjoyed a reunion on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday prior to the Canada Day holiday. They held it in an ideal spot at the Silver Lake campground.

Sixty-one family members signed the guest book. They came from far and near: including: Hay River, N.W.T., St Albert, High Level, Drayton Valley, Grimshaw, Grande Prairie, Calgary, Westlock and Lyndale, Alta.; and Kelowna, B.C. They were mainly descendants of Allen and Harold Broadhead.

As one can imagine, there was lots of visiting, getting caught up on family relationships, playing games together and enjoying the plentiful delicious food. Everyone pitched in to help with the necessary work.

The Broadhead family has a long history in the Waseca area. Walter H. Broadhead Sr. and his wife Eliza left their home in England in 1905 with their four sons, Fred, Walter, Arthur and Edward. Two more sons, John and James, were born in Canada. They came with the Hutchinson party. They picked up their settlers effects in Battleford and after making the trek west they filed on homesteads in what became the Walter School District, Waseca was practically non-existent at the time. So began the rigours of pioneer life. In about 1914 some family members moved to the Sumner District south of the Battle River. Along with the Walter Broadhead family were his brothers, Fred and Alfred and their families. Most of the people at the reunion were descendants of Alfred and Florence Broadhead whose children were Irvin, Allan, Harold and Evelyn.

Time at the reunion was also spent discussing family history. They are looking forward to another reunion in the future

Grace and Lorne Flewell of Red Deer, Alta. are presently visiting with Grace's sister, Sandra Sutherland, her mother, Eva Sutherland of Pine Island Lodge, and other relatives in the area.
