Radisson's 16th annual show and shine was held July 29, on Main Street in Radisson. The event attracted a record number of entries, with 99 vehicles registering and 41 snow machines.

Radisson's 16th annual show and shine was held July 29, on Main Street in Radisson. The event attracted a record number of entries, with 99 vehicles registering and 41 snow machines.

The day ended up being sunny and hot after the storm the night before and the booths ran out of water, pie and ice cream in early afternoon. David Ruzesky and others drove a train made of barrels and gave the kids rides all afternoon. William and the Shadows played a variety of country and western music at the bandstand by the hall for the afternoon.

In the snowmobile category winning the hardware for farthest travelled was Georg Sawka of Edmonton, Alta. The people's choice went to Keith Boxall of Nipawin with a 1973 Thunderjet 440 and the group of six sleds was won by Ken Reid of Warman who had three Arctic Cats and three Yamahas.

The 99 vehicle spanned the gamut from vintage and classic cars, trucks, campers, semi-tractor units and tractors. Wooden trophies made by Bob Herter were given out in the following categories: 1920-29 - Ross Goodfellow of Saskatoon with a 1924 Ford TT; 1930-39 - Reg Schultz of Dalmeny with a 1931 Model A; 1940-49 - Curtis Crabb of Borden with a 1941 Chev; 1950-59 - Bud Small of Saskatoon and his 1952 Chev; 1960-69 - a 1968 Superbee owned by Kim Petz of Martensville; 1970 -70 - Ol Francis of Osler showing a 1972 Javelin; 1980-89 - Matthew Sawchyn of Saskatoon with a 1980 Delta 88 Olds; 1990-99 - Lance Lafond of Osler with a 1991 Mustang Coupe; 2000+ - Russell Nesdoly of Saskatoon displaying a 2005 Viper Mamba.

The best custom award went to Mel Swyrydce of Biggar with a 1953 Ford Coupe. The best convertible was a 1962 Impala owned by Ralph Sotherman of Elrose; The best truck was a 1957 GMC owned by Hershel Smith of Elrose and Chris Schultz of Radisson earned the tractor award for his 1950 John Deere.

Murray McDonald of Richard showed his 2009 HO Heritage Classic morotcycle. The best racing car was a 1973 Gran Torino owned by Tristan Saunders of Borden and an award in he special interest category went to Rocky Vallier of Lashburn with his 1989 Kenworth K100. Travelling the farthest was Travis Bentley of Buffalo Narrows.

Main raffle prizes drawn for the Chamber of Commerce was a picture won by David Swift and a camping set by Leona Bennett of Radisson. The show and shine prizes of a Rider barbecue went to Armendo Lessing of Radisson and a chainsaw to Matthew Ruzesky. There were 20 donated prizes that went to Joan Maxwell, Al Francis (two), Curtis Crabb, Ron Froom, Mary Saunders, Andrew and Tamie Ruzesky, Bonnie Rothenburger, Stew Walton, Rocky Vallier (two), Kirk Sinclair, Gordon Nelson, Mel Swyryda, Leona Bennett, Barry Rutherford, Ebony Beaulae, Ken Reid and Doreen Froom.

Congratulations to Clarence Williams of Borden, who celebrated his 95th birthday July 30 with a barbecue at the farm of his son Gar (MarieAnne) Williams July 31. Everyone was invited to the local cafe in Borden for cake and coffee Aug. 3. Congratulations also to Bob and Ann Wardhaugh, who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Aug. 4, with a supper served by the Borden Lions. A program and dance followed in the Borden Community Centre.

Congratulations to the Rivers West boys' volleyball team that captured the bronze medal Aug. 4 in Meadow Lake at the Sask. Summer Games. They won three games Thursday, lost two Friday and won all three Saturday, against teams from Regina, Saskatoon and other regions. Duncan Sutherland from Borden was on the team, and after having to travel to Meadow Lake for practices for the past three month, everyone (especially his parents Glenn and Sheri) is glad it is finally over and that they won a medal for their efforts.

Radisson Fair is coming up this weekend, with entries in by Thursday evening or by 11 a.m. Friday. There is slo-pitch Saturday, gymkhana at noon, a parade at 11 a.m. and a musical jamboree from 1 to 7 p.m.. Children's activities include Beeper the Clown, rides and a mini tractor pull. There is a supper and a dance in the evening.

Sunday there is a pancake breakfast in the arena from 8 to 11 a.m., a light horse show at 9:30 a.m., musical jamboree from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., vintage tractor pull and wind up of the ball games.

Don't forget to stop at the Royal Purple ice cream booth in the curling rink for a cone or sundae with many toppings.

The members of the Borden 4-H Light Horse Club will be showing off their riding skills at their achievement cay at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at the outdoor arena in Borden Memorial Park.

Aug. 15 is the last day for the children's summer activities program and the Borden Library is holding a wiener roast at 5:30 p.m. followed by bingo at 6:30 p.m. All activities are at Borden Memorial Park and sports ground. Everyone is welcome to this fundraiser event.

Local contractors have been busily installing culverts, water and sewer lines along 2nd Avenue out to Idylwyld Street west of Borden, where a new six-unit condominium is being built. While digging up over the creek that flows through the village they came across an old bridge that was formerly used when Highway No. 5 went through Borden to Saskatoon.
