April 14, the Manitou Creative Quilters held a silent auction and had a bargain table, with items donated by members, at their Sunrise-Sunset Quilt Show. All proceeds from this were donated to the Neilburg Library Board. Janice Graham, president of the club, presented Sharon Schempp, the librarian with $600.

Sympathy is extended to Mabel and Ryan Scoular on the passing of Mabel's brother, Dick Ryan, March 26 in Calgary, Alta. Dick was born on the farm near Baldwinton in 1934 and moved with the family to the Freemont District a few years later. Dick spent his working years in the oilfield service industry, inspecting tubular goods. In 1959, he took equipment to Alaska, to Australia in 1963, and he also worked in Russia and Europe. In 1958 he married Judith Carter in Thornhill, Ont. They have five children and 10 grandchildren.

The Neilburg Recreation Board trip-of-the-month winners for 2013 so far are Sheldon Koch - Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Brenda Skinner of Lashburn - Fernie ski package; Diahann Urlacher - Disneyland; and Murray and Donna Meena of Maymont - Phoenix, Ariz. The winners of the $120 cash for each month were Marilyn Ostensoe, David Ducherer, Blair and Vicki Elliot of McLaughlin, Alta., and Jacquie Hall.

Congratulations to Rachel and Curtis Wightman on the birth of their third son and fourth child, Amos John, on Good Friday. He is a little brother for Gus, Roy, and Clara. The proud local grandparents are Grant and Sandra Wightman of the rural Marsden area.

The Grade 8 and 11 students from Neilburg Composite School (NCS) are currently holding a Bouma barbecue roast fundraiser. The roasts are four and a half to five pounds each and are seasoned, wrapped in foil and ready to roast. They cost $25 each. Please call the school to place your order if a student has not yet contacted you.

Mother Nature tried her best to keep families away from the Story Laboratory Scholastic Book Fair but NCS still managed to hit their goal of $1,500 with total actual sales of $1,618.75. This gave the library $912.98 to spend on Scholastic products.

The book fair winners were: family event winner Hallie Goodfellow; posters - Aliana Worman, Anri Steenkamp, Devon Whitney, Hannah Prystupa, Cooper Whitney, Kailee McGarry, Evan Sawtell, Tia Gibler, Tidja Hoeppner-Basha, Brayden Koch, William Downie, Cassidy Spence, Nick Hein and Paige Johnston; books - Dustin Spence, Jake Hein, Ethel Borja, Colton Walde, Carson Peters, Eduard Borja, Madison Goodfellow, Kailee Johnston, Ann Hewko, Kaylyn Koch, Dyson Gibler, Erin Houlton, Jenna McGarry, Jorin Black, Kyle Whitney, Jordan McGarry, Kale Worman, Craig Hewko, Shawn Whitney, Anna Giesbrecht, Carl Sawtell and Gus Wightman.

The Grade 3 and 4 students have been bowling twice a month since November. Mrs. Newport reports March 27 was the final day of bowling for the year. Throughout the season, the students have learned how to score keep and they have become much better bowlers. Everyone had lots of fun and many students had strikes or spares. The top three bowlers in Grade 4 were: Tidja - 732; Henry - 693 and Hannah - 625. The top three bowlers in Grade 3 were: Kaylyn - 675; William - 661 and Shawn - 625. Thank you to Mrs. Brockhoff for helping with scorekeeping this year.

It was Hat Day April 12 with students paying $2 each to enable them to wear their hat all day at school.

The Neilburg Family Restaurant recently donated some juice for the student lunch program.

The grad class would like to thank the community for the terrific support for their fruit sale. There are a few extra items left to sell if anyone is interested in buying more or got missed the first time. There are Gala and Red Delicious apples, oatmeal raisin, rainbow and dark and white chocolate cookie dough, apple juice and apple/raspberry juice gift packs still available. Call the school if you are interested in any of these products.

Mark June 2 on your calendar. That's the evening Marcie Park will hold a recital for her piano students in the Neilburg Composite School gym. The music starts at 7 p.m.
