The long weekend is over and everything has kicked into high gear - seeding operations, ball season, soccer season and all other things that accompany our annual May calendar of events.

What a creative way for local RCMP to connect with kids. The week of May 13 to 17, members of the Unity RCMP detachment were at all three schools for a friendly pick-up game of soccer at the elementary schools and floor hockey at the high school. It was a well received, relationship-building event that generated smiles all across the board.

UCHS hosted their track meet May 22 with a number of athletes advancing to the district meet in North Battleford May 29 and 30. Winners from the district event will move on to provincials held the first weekend in June.

UCHS is planning their annual awards ceremony for June 4 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. With the grad church service being held May 23, this puts the final few weeks' countdown on for Grade 12s before graduation June 28.

If you love watching a live ball game, head down to the diamonds: Mondays and Wednesdays are the Battlefords Ladies' League Fastball games on the Lions' Diamonds. Between all six other fastball teams, every other night of the week will also see games. Baseball will also be keeping the diamonds busy during the week. The Cardinals have a number of games lined up on their diamond in preparation for their run at senior men's provincials, being held in Unity this August. And, for another kind of ball, you can always head to the diamonds for Friday night slo-pitch league.

This weekend, the annual Miners' slo-pitch tournament and dance takes place at the ball diamonds. Watch for the home run derby Saturday night. The booth will be open and there will be plenty of ball games to watch throughout the weekend.

Two events have been added to next weekend's Unity Western Days. The competitive western shooting competition will be at the grounds both Friday and Saturday. As well, a brand new inaugural celebrity bull ride has been added to the rodeo roster. Friday night you can enjoy the entertainment of HillBilly Blunt while Saturday night, Longshot hits the stage for the rodeo dance. The citizen of the year will be named as well as a rodeo queen crowned from contestants Alison Kuhn, Brittany Hauta and Kendall Krenn.

Swimming lesson registration began this week.

Unity Credit Union and the Unity Facilities Committee are holding a kick-off barbecue Thursday, May 30 from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the credit union parking lot. Unity Credit Union, who purchased naming rights for the pool, will be unveiling the name along with hosting a children's carnival with a pool-related theme. The UFC will cook up the food in addition to providing details surrounding the project.

The Unity Purina Walk for Dog Guides is May 26, with registration starting at 1 p.m. and the walk beginning at 1:30 p.m. Organized by local volunteers, this walk is a grassroots event providing community members with an inclusive, fun and meaningful way to positively impact the lives of local residents living with disabilities. Come on out and see what the event is all about.

Don't forget the new watering schedule with west side being Tuesdays and Fridays and the east side being Mondays and Thursdays during the hours of 5 - 9 a.m. and 8 - 11 p.m.

Not only did Unity welcome a new grocery story last month, we now have two brand new businesses on Main Street which include Cross Fit Lair and Special Event Rentals, with Carolyn Kopp. With the continued dedication of the town's economic development director and the local chamber of commerce, as well as commitment from residents to shop locally, we are looking to retain local businesses as well as recruit new ones.

Coffee row has plenty of seeding stories on the table. The prominence of water in some areas has certainly delayed things and everyone in the community is hoping for the best for our farmer friends. NHL playoffs and local ball season are a sure bet for debate. And the upcoming Rider season is tossed around on occasion. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week
