Radisson Royal Purple held their meeting April 7, with the ladies dining out at the local restaurant prior to the meeting. The lodge decided to have their Royal Purple Day tea June 4 when all those 50-plus from Borden, Maymont and Radisson will be invited for the strawberry tea and program.
Information was read on the future of the Royal Purple of Canada, and voting was done whether to incorporate or not, with the final decision to be made at the national convention in July.
A thank you note was read from Kacy Tkachuk of Hafford who had won the RP $50 scholarship at the Hafford Music Festival in March.
Election of officers will be held at the May meeting and the raffle went to the lodge. Members and local businesses are selling charity appeal tickets with early bird draw May 13 and the vehicle or $20,000 draw on June 14.
The Borden Friendship Club held their April regular meeting and annual meeting April 9, with more than 25 in attendance. At the regular meeting, plans were finalized for the spring tea and bake sale April 15 and a casino trip April 17. The club is donating $80 to the beautiful Borden committee for the four flowerpots by the seniors' residences.
A motion was passed to have the annual meeting in the future at 7 p.m. to accommodate those working. The BCCPC, or hall, committee announced their annual garage sale May 23 and 24 and would like donations of articles. The club will purchase a music stand.
At the annual meeting, officers elected by acclamation for the upcoming year were president Elizabeth Derksen, vice-president Rita Smith, secretary Lorraine Olinyk and treasurer/room bookings Florence Neufeld.
The committees are: lunch - buyer Audrey Baker, Bev Assman, Dianne Rawlyk, Doreen Flath, Jean Sawchyn, Jean Graham, Irene Krivoshein and Lorraine Olinyk; sending cards - Jean Hryniuk or Anne Palmer; entertainment - Ed Neufeld and John Petrun; caretaking and setting up - Gary Palmer with volunteers to help; decorating - volunteers with help of Elizabeth or Rita.
The membership fee remains at $10 for the year and life member certificates, for those 85-plus, will be presented to Rueben Derksen, Winona Taylor and Laura Loeppky.
The monthly and annual financial reports were given by Florence, showing income from April 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014 of $9,680 and expenses of $10,032, leaving a chequing balance of $2,360 plus two term deposits and the bingo account of over $1,000.
Thank you was extended to the past executive and committees for their excellent work over the past year. Retiring president Lottie Petriew thanked everyone who helped her, with the club increasing membership to 63, having very good programs and having lots of fun together.
The Kaiser tournament April 8 had 21 out to play. Winners were Art Flath and Pat Trischuk. The club had their final Kaiser tournament for the season April 15.
Borden Action Bowl held their windup banquet, awards night and silent auction April 12 in the Borden Community Centre, with Homestyle Catering serving a roast beef supper to close to 90 guests. Every bowler got a handmade decorated cookie in the shape of a bowling ball and pin with Action Bowl printed on it, all made by Melissa Braun.
Winning the 55-plus fall champs, roll-off and winter league champs trophy were the Dandelions - Florence Neufeld, Jean Hryniuk, Jean Sawchyn, Debbie Ramage and Lorraine Olinyk. The winter roll-offs were won by the Buttercups - Jean Hryniuk, Ann Brand, Anne Palmer, Irene Krivoshein and Lorraine Olinyk. In 55-plus, high averages were Lorraine with 157 and 154 and Clayton Clark with 123 and 115.
For the mixed league, the Turkey Hunters won the fall league champs and roll-offs. They were Ian and Mandy Tracksell, Ivan and Ilene Youchezin and Bev Assman. For the winter league it was Pookie Bear & Friends - Shawn, Nathan and Justin Barth, Rob and Kristie Fehr and Shari Nickel - who were the champs and roll-off winners. High averages were Mandy Tracksell with 167 and159, Shaun Barth in the fall with 187 and in the winter Ian Tracksell with a 194 average. Mandy Tracksell also scored a 325 single.
Other high score winners getting pins were Ivan Youchezin - 334, Laura Loeppky - 218, Dennis Bueckert - 235, Jordan Hauk - 225, Danna Derbowka - 225 and Kris Derbowka - 255. Turkey pins went to Bev Assman and Dennis Bueckert.
Cookies were handed out to all the other bowlers for many various reasons - backseat bowling banquet arranger, greatest sportsmanship, quietest, over 90 years, amazing curve ball, best bingo bowl organizer, etc. Winning the 50/50 of $92.50 was Dave Buckingham. The door prize was won by Michael Sutherland. Louise Clark guessed the candies in the jar.
Kendall Redhead, Action Bowl manager, was MC and presented the awards. She thanked everyone who had helped her in any way, the bowlers and her family. She gave a report on bowling saying there had been 64 adults, 19 children and 20 rentals since glow bowling was installed, sent $109.85 to Telemiracle for headpins, and thanked all those who donated for Phase 1 renovations costing $24,000. The renovations include new flooring, furniture, fridge, microwave, painting, glow bowling, etc.
Jamie Brandrick, on behalf of the Village of Borden, thanked Kendall for all her efforts with the bowling alley. She raised most of the $24,000 herself, did most of the work with the help of her husband Tom and her family, and went out and got more people to bowl. Kendall was presented with a gift certificate to dine out in the city.
Bowlers and others had donated 75 items for the silent auction and the winners were announced to end the evening.
In badminton, Borden students Natalie Anderson and Rachel Sutherland won the junior girls' doubles at conference playoffs for Prairie Spirit School Division. The girls had won in Langham April 8, in Stobart April 10 and at VCA April 12. Congratulations, girls.
Dancers from Borden Dance Club competed at Biggar April 12, winning mostly silver and bronze medals. They will compete at the Aberdeen dance competition in Saskatoon the weekend of April 25 and 26. They will have their own dance recital May 3 at 7 p.m. in the Borden Community Centre.
