Radisson Co-op discussing merger with Battlefords Co-op

Radisson Co-operative Association held a special meeting April 23 in Radisson Town Hall to vote on the merger with Battlefords Co-op.

Radisson Co-operative Association held a special meeting April 23 in Radisson Town Hall to vote on the merger with Battlefords Co-op. Brian Clair chaired the meeting and, with the help of an overhead, explained the retailing industry, gave a review of both co-ops, merger principles, vision and plans for the future and the advantages and disadvantages of a merger and then the floor was opened up for questions. There were a number. President Randy Graham and general manager Pat Smith from Battlefords Co-op were at the meeting and they answered many of the concerns.

After an hour of questions and discussion, the vote was finally held with 30 voting for the merger and 12 against. Battleford members will vote this week and, if approved, the merger takes effect Nov. 30.

Radisson Co-op has 588 active members and they were all notified of the meeting and vote. Posters had been up and those at the annual meeting knew about it, but only 42 showed up to cast their ballot. If they didn't get out to vote, then they had better not complain. The members are what keep a co-op store open and the store, wherever it is located, only stays open if members support it.

Borden Co-op beef supper and annual meeting is May 8 at 6 p.m. in the Borden Community Centre. All members are encouraged to attend.

The Borden Friendship Club had over 35 out to their April supper, birthdays and program. Happy birthday was sung to Ann Brand, Mary Thiessen and Ed Neufeld with cakes brought by Jean Sawchyn and Martha Rempel and ice cream by Gary and Ann Palmer. Entertaining for the evening were CarMel Country from Maymont and Hafford - Mel Deagnon, Tom Caldwell, Dave Heibert, Vern Hawkness and Walt Dumont. They sang and played many of the old tunes and did some instrumentals featuring Tom on harmonica, Walt and Mel on guitar and singing, Vern on bass guitar and Dave with great sounds from his electric guitar.

The following information was submitted by Lion Bob Wardhaugh, secretary of Borden Lions.

Borden Lions of District 5SKN have been serving the community for 32 years and have lasted so long because of the satisfaction we get from working for the community and because of the support, which we thank the community for. Belonging to a world-wide organization means we can help not just locally but literally all over the world. Lions International gives a structure that a group of well-meaning people just don't have and we would have fallen apart years ago without it.

Club members pay an annual membership which covers most of the cost of administration, meaning the money we raise goes where it was intended. Lions Club International (LCIF) allows us to help overseas whether it be a natural disaster or a health problem and presently, besides on-going vision projects, Lions are targeting childhood measles and literacy. Saskatchewan has received funds from LCIF for flooding and right now are requesting funding for a two-year diabetes screening project. As Lions we concentrate on sight-related programs such as CNIB, Dog Guides (Lion Foundation of Canada) and diabetes. The Lions Eye Bank of Sask is a project we are very proud of. Cornea transplants rely on the supply from donors so please remember to fill out your donor card.

The following is how the Borden Lions spent their money earned from catering in 2012: Borden firefighters, $500; Borden Care Home, $200; Borden parks and recreation, $200; Borden Busy Bees Preschool, $250; Borden Lions post-secondary scholarship, $500; Borden Community Centre roof fund, $200; Borden School graduation, $200; Borden local family in crisis, $200; Borden Ministerial Fund, $182; Lions of Canada Dog Guides, $500; LCIF for crisis at home and abroad, $732; CNIB, $300; Huntington's Society (in memory of former Lion Bill Nichol), $200; Canadian Diabetes (tag day and Mother's Day brunch, $1,272; 5SKN Lions Wilderness Experience for handicapped, $300; Sask. Lions Eye Bank, $300; Hafford Music Festival, $50; Sask Lions Foundation, $200; 5SKN Sight and Service Foundation, $500. Ava Hill, a child from Langham, was able to travel for treatment in the U.S.A. with $4,000 in donations from the last two foundations.

Not all of our projects make money but they add to community life. Borden Lions organize and sponsor the Remembrance Day Service, the Christmas Carol Festival, the Borden School Speak-off and student peace poster contest. We presently have 18 hard working members and we are always looking for more. The Lions thank everyone who has hired them for catering; we depend on your support.
