Rabbit Lake Miracle Bunnies in Relay for Life 10 years running

The seeding is done! The spraying is beginning and the rain keeps falling. Now who was it who said that because the winter had so little snow the summer would be dry? I know I heard that somewhere.

The seeding is done! The spraying is beginning and the rain keeps falling. Now who was it who said that because the winter had so little snow the summer would be dry? I know I heard that somewhere. And for those who watch the hoar frost all I can say is there must have been lots of it in late December and early January. This is not so good for the camping season but I am sure the lake is rising and that is a good thing. More seriously the farmers are asking for heat but are happy with the moisture. The crops look good and the pastures are off to a great start. Let's hope we see a bumper crop at the end of it all.

Has anyone noticed the proliferation of lady slippers in the ditches this year? At one time finding a lady slipper was quite an experience but this year the ditches are yellow with those exotic orchids. Maybe the moisture, maybe the mild winter - who knows?

The Rabbit Lake Miracle Bunnies once again entered Relay for Life, sponsored by the Canadian Cancer Society, June 8.This year's participants were Isabelle McLennan (captain), Ruth Hrynewich, Jeanette Krelow, Janette Klaassen, Shelly Nelson, Sandra McLennan Kam, Norma Sherman, Carol Ferguson, Cindy Miller and Shelly Laughlin. The Rabbit Lake Miracle Bunnies, under the umbrella of the Rabbit Lake Health Care Auxiliary, attended the annual Relay for Life in North Battleford.

This year was the 10th year of this group participating in the North Battleford event. Over the years the Miracle Bunnies have raised over $10,000 for Relay for Life through the support of the Rabbit Lake community. Thanks to all who continue to support. Also a special thank you to the families of Ruth Hrynewich and to Shelly and Sandra and their families who joined this year. The group was approached by unfamiliar survivors of cancer thanking them for their support in this journey. Isabelle McLennan thanks all the members of the team for their support, camaraderie and continued dedication.

The Jones family held a family reunion in Leoville, June 4 weekend. Because Hazel Speerbrecker, née Jones, is a resident in the nursing home in Leoville it made sense to have the reunion where she could participate.

The northwest zone of the square dancers held a dance and campout at Meeting Lake Regional Park, also June 4 weekend. About 75 dancers took to the floor. Many zone callers kept the dancers whirling but Gary Winter of Edmonton stole the show.

The community officially welcomed Chad Doell with a grocery shower and an evening of visiting at the seniors' centre, June 11.

Sandwith sure knows how to put on a good brunch. On Father's Day a large group of people from Sandwith and neighbouring communities gathered at the Sandwith Hall to socialize and eat a great brunch buffet. It just goes to show that a community is not a collection of buildings but rather a collection of people.

WhistleStop Foods hosted a steak and lobster supper in the Rabbit Lake Community Hall June 15. The event was very well attended and very successful. By the number of requests from those attending, this will become an annual event in the village.

A big thank you goes out to the groups that have already mowed and trimmed the local cemeteries. What would we do without volunteers and organizers? Nancy Penley organizes the groups for the RM cemetery and Angel Haryung for the Pleasantsite cemetery.

The family of the late Elsie Fenner held an interment at the RM cemetery June 16 and the family of the late Paul Kobernick will be doing the same at the same cemetery, July 1.

As the month closes, Medstead and Spiritwood schools will be holding their graduation exercises. Patrick and Gwendolyn Laughlin will be graduating from Rosthern Junior College, June 24. Congratulations and good luck to all graduates this year.

The Rabbit Lake Seniors' Sunrise Circle had their monthly potluck supper June 20.

So what is coming up? The village will be hosting Rabbit Lake Rhubarb Festival July 3. Check posters for details. There will be Canada Day in the park at Meeting Lake Regional Park, July 1. The Carlton Trail Jamboree will be bringing recording artists to the hill July 6, 7 and 8, and there will be a slo-pitch tournament at the park July 14 and 15. All in all it is starting to be a busy summer!
