Quilters from several Northwest communities came together in July to sew quilts to be donated to flood victims in Â鶹´«Ã½AVern Alberta.

Thirteen members of River's Edge Quilters rallied together in July to sew quilt tops for people affected by the flood in Calgary and southern Alberta.

Carol Johnson shared the quilting technique for sewing jelly roll race quilt tops. Each member brought 42, 2 1/2 inch strips, and enjoyed sewing the quilt tops. Many quilters sewed one quilt top, some sewed two quilt tops and one member sewed three quilt tops. A few members helped finish making the bindings and sewed labels on each quilt top.

The labels indicated the quilt tops were from members in North Battleford, Battleford, Cut Knife and Cochin. A few members who could not attend, but wanted to contribute, donated ready made quilt tops, ready cut strips, bindings and backings. In one week, with two days of sewing together, some members taking them home to complete and then sewing again the following Thursday/Friday the group completed 17 jelly roll quilt tops. Each quilt top had a binding attached with the top. Some also had backings and batting included.

A group of quilters in Calgary will machine quilt these quilt tops, sew binding on each and see that the quilts are distributed to the flood relief families.

Joyce assisted us by transporting the 24 quilt tops which included 17 jelly roll quilts, four large quilts, three small quilts, two slabs and eight backings to Traditional Pastime Quilt Shop, which was a drop off place in Calgary for the donations.

A big thank you to those who assisted with this worthy project, especially when everyone was so busy in July. Your time, sewing skills and donations are greatly appreciated.
