Princesses undeterred by cold temperatures

Are we still talking about Olympics? The success of the 38th annual Telemiracle? Or this weekend's Briar finals? Or the relentless cold snap experienced for what seems like most of winter - break the polar vortex spell someone!

In spite of bitterly cold temperatures, it was a terrific day to look and feel like a princess. St. Peter's CWL hosted a Princess Tea for ages 0-99. It was fun to be amongst all the princesses and enjoy princess activities and hear the message of how there is a princess in us all.

At Unity Composite High school, curling is now officially a wrap. Congratulations to the junior girls who earned a back to back district gold medal, the junior boys who earned a fourth place at districts and the new mixed team who came up against some tough competition but kept on showing UCHS pride throughout. Junior basketball finished with the girls winning silver and the boys winning a bronze while the senior teams just wrapped up conference play with the senior girls easily winning both games. Badminton is back and UCHS track team members continue to practise. Grad students are busy with scholarship applications, post-secondary school applications and plans as well as ramping up plans for graduation in June.

UPS Grade 6 students will be heading off to their annual division bonspiel March 13 after practising since the beginning of January. The choir is in preparations for this year's music festival. Another report card session is nearly ready. The ski trip cancelled earlier in February has been rescheduled for March 28.

St. Peter's school band, under the direction of Mrs. Keller, will be the feature entertainment at the upcoming Lions Evening Out. The school is also in preparations for the annual music festival. Lenten season leading up to Easter will also be the theme at St. Peter's in the weeks ahead. As well, St. Peter's hosted a workshop Feb. 27 on digital responsibility. This will be followed up with another session on cyber bullying, being held March 27. This speaker has a great message for parents and students alike so don't miss out your opportunity for this.

Some hockey teams continue their quests for championship banners. The Unity Miners have advanced to league semifinals. The skating club preparing for their annual ice carnival Friday.

The curling club hosts two more bonspiels including the annual Bramiche Ladies' Bonspiel March 14-16. Call the curling club at 306-228-2212 to register your team.

Make sure you head to Sears Sister's flowers Friday and join Lois Gilbert and staff for their final day in business. Lois and girls will be serving cake and coffee as they set to close the doors on this business of over 12 years. We wish the best to Lois in her retirement.

Are you interested in culture, food and music? A committee has started the initial planning and organizing of a cultural festival in Unity. If you are interested in helping organize or offering a specific booth, contact Cindy Vanderlinde at 306-228-4228 or call the town at 306-228-2621. A planning meeting will take place on March 10 at 7 p.m. at the town office.

Unity and District museum is hosting a St. Patrick's Day supper at the Adanac Hall on the museum grounds. Entertainment to follow with the supper beginning at 6 p.m. The museum continues to hold their Sunday brunches as well.

A Ducks Unlimited banquet and auction will take place March 15 at the Unity Community Centre. Tickets are only $25 a person and include a dinner, live auction, silent auction and raffles. Tickets are available at the North West Terminal and Cinema Satellite.

March 18 the Unity Wagon Wheels Square Dance Club is hosting a promotional learning workshop from 8-10:30 p.m. at the Legion Hall. Free admission and is open to everyone with refreshments and lunch provided. Contact Bill at 306-228-3693 or 306-228-3698 for more details.

The Lions have another terrific event lined up for March 21 that will include the Meota Hobby Band, the Kuhn Family and the St. Peter's Brass Band on the entertainment program. The evening will also include a supper with tickets only $35 available at Maverick Tannery or Wildeman's Sports Store.

Delta Coop holds their annual meetings the week of March 17, with Unity's meeting taking place March 19 at the Legion Hall. All meetings are supper meetings. Ticket cut off is March 12.

Unity Credit Union will hold their annual general meeting on March 25 starting with supper at 6:30 and meeting to follow. Tickets are only $5.

Coffee row have been discussing curling season both local and televised season of champions, as well as the local provincial hockey quests. With no surprise, the appearance of a completely new Rider team for the upcoming season has garnered a mixture of concern and no worries. The weather theories are evolving for the upcoming spring.
