The Borden Busy Bees Pre-school held their graduation for four-year-olds May 25, in the Borden Community Centre. The three- and four- year-olds sang six action songs - I Know My ABCs, Baby Bumble Bee, Months of the Year to the Macarena tune, Bananas Unite, Days of the Week and Five Little Monkeys. Each four- year-old, wearing a grad hat, received a diploma stating they have graduated preschool and are going on to kindergarten in the fall. Each student received a goodie bag, then lunch was enjoyed by all present.
The Borden Community Centre Preservation Committee held their annual gigantic garage sale May 23 and 24 in and outside the centre, with silent auction items set up in the seniors' centre. The Grade 12 class sold lunch on the Saturday in the seniors' centre, serving hot dogs, hamburgers, pie and beverages. The BCCPC realized over $3,500 from the garage sale and silent auction. Any of the household items, women's and children's clothing left went to the Saskatoon Women's Shelter. The last hour on Saturday, you could get a bag and fill it for a buck.
In track and field Borden athletes did well at the Prairie Spirit Conference meet with 21 of 27 students placing in the top eight and going on to districts May 29 and 30. Those students were: Zach Martens, fourth in high jump; Brooke Brazeau, second in javelin; Danika Pidwerbesky, second in triple jump, third in 1500m; Wyatt Piprell, fourth in 100m hurdles, fifth in 400m, eighth in 100m; Cole Sutherland, first in discus, second in shot put; Natalie Anderson, sixth in high jump; Rachel Sutherland, sixth in shot put; Max Gader, fourth in 3000m; Kirsten Szwydky, fifth in shot put and eighth in triple jump; Sara Prescesky, fifth in 80m hurdles, breaking a long-time school record with a time of 15.35 seconds.
In juniors, Donovan Hebig placed eighth in 200m; Cullen Sutherland third in discus, sixth in long jump and second with the senior 4x100m relay. Brooklyn Gader was first in 3000m and second in 1500m and 800m. Emma Pidwerbesky was first in 1500m and shot put, second in triple jump and fourth in high jump. Emma Prescesky was first in javelin and sixth in shot put.
In seniors, Connor Wainwright was sixth in discus, seventh in javelin and 800M and second in the 4 x 400 relay and fourth in the 4x100 relay, Andrew Derksen was fifth in 800m, fourth in 1500m and 3000m and second in the 4x400M relay. Duncan Sutherland was second in 3000m and the 4x400M relay, fourth in 400m, long jump and the 4x100m relay and eighth in high jump. Eric Westad was second in 1500m and the 4x400m relay and third in 3000m.
Going to provincials in Moose Jaw June 6 and 7 from districts are Emma Pidwerbesky who was first in 1500m and second in shot put, Brooklyn Gader who was first in 3000m and second in 1500m, Eric Westad who was third in 1500m and Duncan Sutherland who was second in 400M and third in 1500M.
The Borden Seniors' Room was tastefully decorated for the bridal shower May 3, honouring Alison Sutherland, who is marrying Earl Kieper of Radisson July 19. Michelle Sutherland welcomed everyone, then the head table was introduced - Diane Kieper, mother of the groom; Michelle Sutherland, mother of the bride; Jodi Nolin, sister to Earl; bride-to-be Alison; Madison Sutherland, sister; Kim Kieper, sister-in-law.
After a couple of games, Alison was asked questions on how well she knew Earl, getting a chocolate for each right answer and bubble gum for each wrong answer. Her mouth was soon full of gum and she had to spit some out to answer questions. The gifts were opened while guests enjoyed lunch and beverages. Alison thanked everyone for coming and for the many wonderful gifts.
The Borden Friendship Club held their monthly potluck supper and celebrated May birthdays May 28 with 48 members and guests on hand. Blowing out the candles on the cake, brought by Ann Brand and Ann Kohut, were Eileen Petrun, Ilene Youchezin, Jean Graham and Rita Smith.
Following cake and ice cream, entertaining was Aryn Polischuk of Borden who played three pieces on the piano - Beethoven - Sonata Opus No.1, Schubert - Impromptu in E flat and Khachaturian Taccata. Aryn graduated from Borden School in 2013, got his Grade 8 piano in 2013 and will be getting his Grade 11 piano in 2014, only starting piano four years ago. Aryn played saxophone through school in the school band and also plays guitar. He won awards at the Dalmeny and Saskatoon music festivals this spring and competed at the Saskatchewan provincial festival this past weekend. He is enrolled in the music program at the University of Brandon this fall.
After Aryn's great piano playing, the Rempel family entertained - Ruben, his daughters JaeLynn Rempel and Janeen Penner, along with her husband Curt on guitar or Amanda Rempel with CD accompaniment. Songs were sung by the trio and both girls sang solos as well as a duet, From This Moment On. The trio closed with I'll Fly Away and How Great Thou Art.
Borden will have a busy weekend June 6 - 8 with community garage sales June 6 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the farmers market from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 7, the garage sales start at 9 a.m., the parade is at 11 a.m., slo-pitch ball starts at 9 a.m. There will be a kids' zone, the museum opening at noon with flag raising and free cake and ice cream, followed by a steak supper from 6 to 8 p.m. and entertainment from 8 p.m. - 1 a.m. at the grounds. Sunday, ball continues and there will be a homerun contest - 10 balls for $10 - a 50/50 draw each day, kids' zone and concession booth and beer gardens at the grounds.
