Easter is upon us. If you are travelling to spend time with family or attend an event, take extra time on our busy roadways and arrive safely. If you are hosting at home, make sure to show off your community to your guests. That might include Easter service at one of our community churches, or having a browse through some of our shopping opportunities in town.
Last weekend was indeed a busy one with the wrapup of the week long Music Festival, the indoor RV show and the spring trade show, all of which brought many visitors to town, which is always a boost to our town’s economy.
A special shoutout to a reader of this column, Clare, as she recovers at home. Wishing her a speedy recovery as well as some good reading in this newspaper as she and her husband tell me they enjoy reading the community columns, including Unity’s, in this paper.
Sold signs are always exciting to see as it means there is movement in the housing market and whether that is newcomers or first time home owners or even just a change, it always is a positive sign as it means people want to be here.
At UCHS, Easter break is upon them. Wishing the best of travels to UCHS travel club as they are off to Greece. Congratulations to all singles and doubles in junior badminton who advanced from conferences to districts. Senior badminton conferences took place on April 10. Congratulations to Grade 12 Thomas Ward who captured top spot and top five for several categories from Saskatchewan Combine that took place in Moose Jaw April 6 weekend. Track and field are now practicing outdoors as meets are coming up and in less than a month will be UCHS and district track meets taking place. These are the last sports on the season’s schedule. Congratulations to UCHS drama who captured their regional drama festival top nods and have earned a spot at upcoming provincials in May. After 30-plus years of drama win drought, back to back provincial berths are very impressive. Junior high student led conferences took place April 11 while senior high along with career fair activity are set to run April 17. When students return April 26 they will be kept busy with the final portion of semester two in this school year, which means Grade 12 students are entering the last two months of high school before graduation takes place.
UPS staff and students are also ready for their Easter break starting at dismissal today. Once they return they will take on the last couple months of this school year with some new lesson learning, a new sports season and soon field trip activity to begin.
St. Peter’s School students and staff have finished their Lenten journey as they prepared for Easter. Following their Easter break, they will jump right into the last leg of their school year with some new lessons on tap as well as some new extra-curricular activities ready to go.
It is hoped that following Easter break, soccer and ball fields will be ready to go for these programs. Unity is very fortunate to have multiple programs for youth in our community to participate in.
Don’t forget, tomorrow, Good Friday, Way of the Cross Walk will take place in its 17th year on April 19 starting and ending at Unity United Church with hot cross buns, starting 10 a.m. A great interactive service for all ages put on by the Ministerial Association finishes with hot cross buns and hot drinks and fellowship after the service. Of course, all churches will also hold celebratory Easter Sunday services as well. Please check with your denomination of your choice for exact service times.
Revolution Dance will host The Flat out dance challenge next weekend, April 29 and 30 and soon thereafter will be the yearend showcase of stars at the annual recital. Stay tuned to their Facebook page, your local paper and ads around town for all the details
Museum brunches continue until the end of April, except, of course, for Easter Sunday. Watch for upcoming spring and summer events at your local museum by watching signs around town, your local paper updates in addition to following their Facebook page. This is a fine venue that is a source of plenty of community pride. It is used multiple times throughout the year for various activities and events and the hardworking museum committee hope that you will continue to support their activity as well as bringing your visitors to come and see all that our museum has to offer.
Coffee row folks, in some capacity, will take a short break as many will be spending Easter either at home hosting or travelling to see family for the holiday. They will resume after Easter and have plenty of conversation topics to review that will include the popular weather discussions as well as the multiple events and activities that have taken place and are upcoming in our community. So you can see life is full of fun and activity in Unity and our friends at coffee row sharing this traditional part of our community culture. Until next time...
