Postcards are a relatively recent invention, patented by J. P. Carlton of Philadelphia in 1861. Postcards with illustration on one side and the address on the other were first issued during the Franco-Prussian War. They were used as regular communication between family and friends, especially in large cities, until the telephone became more common in homes in the early 20th century.
Layers of the Soul is the current exhibition of postcards in the Window Salon of the Chapel Gallery. Gallery members have created postcards using a variety of media to relate to the theme of the show and each card was mailed to the gallery through Canada Post. The postcards challenge the artists to present their vision in miniature. This is the third postcard exhibition for the gallery.
