Please show your gratitude by attending Remembrance Day services

Lest we forget Please take part in one of the several Remembrance Day services coming up, whether at the school or the community-wide one held at St. Peter's Parish.

Lest we forget Please take part in one of the several Remembrance Day services coming up, whether at the school or the community-wide one held at St. Peter's Parish. In light of the recent tragic events in Quebec and Ontario, we need to show our gratitude for past and present soldiers who keep us "land of the free because of the brave."

There is a very real concern for the long-term sustainability of our local Legion without some new members to come on board. Meetings have only housed nine members and the average age of those attending is close to 80-plus. As quoted by a current member, "The Legion, in a year's time, may not be the Legion without a membership drive." Seriously consider if this is a task you can commit to as the loss of our local Legion would be life changing in this community.

Speaking of forgetting! How I could have forgotten to wish my father-in-law in North Battleford a happy 80th birthday in my last column?! My apologies! He's a gem and we had a fabulous time celebrating this milestone birthday with him.

Well, it's not like we didn't know it was coming. The snow that came, as predicted, Nov. 2 ensured that winter is on its way in. This means slow down folks and pay attention to those road reports.

St. Peter's School is getting ready for report cards and student-led conferences. Report cards are due out Nov. 25 with student-led conferences the next two nights, as arranged through the school.

The volleyball teams will travel to Holy Family School in North Battleford for a mini tournament Nov. 20.

Grade 6s will get the privilege of attending We Day in Saskatoon Nov. 7, a phenomenal experience for youth that empowers them to come back to their communities and give back.

The book fair will run in conjunction with report cards and student-led conferences Nov 25-27, a great way to get some early Christmas shopping done and support the school library.

Unity Public School held Remembrance Day services to honour our veterans and remind students what Nov. 11 is all about. Once again the school hosted a lunch for the Legion members in attendance.

Report cards will go home Nov. 21. There is a PD day Nov. 24 meaning no school for kids and Nov. 26-27 student-led conferences will be held as part of report card information for the parents.

Unity Composite High School has so much on the go. Bravo, SADD and SLC students who dressed up for Halloween for a great cause. The "We Scare Hunger" campaign had students canvassing homes for collections for the food bank.

Students are out and about with the annual fruit sale fundraiser. This popular product comes from DeSimone Farms in BC and has always been popular with the public. You can contact any UCHS student or the school if you want to make sure you don't miss out on this sale. Proceeds go to support a number of extra-curricular activities and events at UCHS.

There will be no school Nov. 11 due to Remembrance Day as well as none Nov. 24 for a professional development day.

Junior girls' volleyball hosted conference playoffs Nov. 1 and the top four teams from this event advance to district playdowns Nov. 6. This solid team of junior girls, who have dominated tournament play, had no trouble winning all three games to advance them to districts.

Junior boys had similar success winning all their games but one, advancing them to districts which will be hosted at Unity Nov. 6.

Senior girls' volleyball will compete at regional playoffs Nov. 14-15 in Biggar where they hope to secure a berth to provincials in LaLoche.

Warrior football, in playoff season, travelled to Watrous for the provincial semifinal Nov. 1 but sadly it was not meant to be. This is the end of high school football for a number of players and, as admirable as their season was, it ended too soon for these seniors.

Now that football is over and volleyball is winding down, we will soon see the basketball hoops in action as that is the next sports season on the agenda at UCHS, as well as curling which will begin regular practices soon.

Hockey season is fully underway. The Miners kicked off their home opener in the newly revamped SWHL senior men's hockey league that now includes Luseland, Macklin, Unity and Wilkie as well as Biggar. This has created much excitement amongst hockey fans and let's hope that excitement results in support for our senior hockey in town.

The curling season has officially started. Ladies, don't forget the new date for the Bramiche Farms sponsored ladies' bonspiel Nov. 14 to 16. Next up is the Sifto Cash spiel slated for Dec. 5 to 7. Junior curling is slated to begin Nov. 10 with 22 kids registered so far. And if you haven't registered for this curling season yet, you can call the curling rink lounge at 306-228-2212. Check out the new Facebook page for the latest updates.

They've been here before and have received highly favourable reviews. Tickets are on sale now for the Louisiana Hayride Christmas taking place Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m.at the community centre. Tickets can be bought at Our Drug Store.

Speaking of musical talent, the Boser sisters have a new CD for sale available at Our Drug Store in Unity. These gals have entertained at many events in Unity and their talent is a beautiful assembly of harmony with their vocals.

The Unity and District Museum is on its winter vacation. However, fundraising for this fabulous facility is a year-long endeavour. The Sunday pancake brunches are set to return starting Nov. 16. With that being said, the committee, also short on helpers, is looking to the community for volunteers to help with this weekly fundraiser.

It's been a difficult year for the museum as the facility suffered some vandalism, the number of visitors was down this year and quite a few of their faithful members suffered some health issues as age becomes more and more of a factor for many of the dedicated museum volunteers. This is another organization that is desperately seeking younger, interested individuals who will be available to take up where our other members are becoming unable to help as much as they once did.

The Unity museum is unique to Saskatchewan, it's a mainstay for many events and photo shoots in Unity and they would like to keep it that way. The artifacts and archives and history there are valuable to residents of today and those in the future. Won't you consider lending a hand?

Once again the town is reminding residents of what is considered recyclable when depositing items at the recycle centre. Please use this centre wisely. Do not leave electronics - remember SARCAN recycles some of this material - or sports bags, strollers and bikes, tires or furniture. Let's all do our part in being responsible recyclers.

Coffee row has been discussing football season and what the playoffs could bring for our Riders. They are also enjoying reviewing our local hockey teams as well as what's on the agenda at the curling rink this season. A quiet Halloween was reviewed and thoughts are now on Remembrance Day activities that will take place in town. And one of the fine gentlemen on this panel recently celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary - congratulations, Leo and Doreen Boser! So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
