They just can't help themselves. Horse people, that is.

Blue and Jack were pulling a cutter built by Pernala, who says they've been attending this rally for four or five years. Rock and Pernala, who works in the pasture system, attend other similar events as well. Pernala sums up with, "It's horses. That kind of covers it, winter or summer."

What's better than enjoying a winter day just made for horses clopping across the snow, pulling cutters of various shapes and sizes?

As one participant of the sixth annual Battlefords Harness Club Cutter Rally put it, "It's horses. That kind of covers it."

While the weather was perfect for the rally itself, relatively warm with softly falling snow, it was not so good for getting to the rally, said one of the organizers, Ed Loewen. The roads were icy, so many participants teamed up for easier travelling. Thirteen horse trailers eventually lined up across the road from Fort Battleford National Historic Park, where registration took place and a banquet wound things up.

While the numbers were down from last year, said Loewen, they raised more money. He expects the day will clear about $700 after expenses. Each year, said Loewen, the club has presented most of that money to the Town of Battleford for its walking trails, keeping back some "seed money" for the next year's rally.
