Party coming up, but give blood first

The countdown to Canada Day is on. But before that day arrives, the last days of school are yet to be played out, with many students writing departmental exams and preparing to attend awards and graduation ceremonies at the end of the week.

The countdown to Canada Day is on. But before that day arrives, the last days of school are yet to be played out, with many students writing departmental exams and preparing to attend awards and graduation ceremonies at the end of the week.

Mid-week, there are a couple of events to take note of.

On Wednesday, June 26, there will be a blood donor clinic at the Alex Dillabough Centre in Battleford, You can book your appointment to save a life by phoning 1-888-2-DONATE or by going online at www.blood.ca. The clinic will run from 2 to 8 p.m. The Canadian Blood Services reminds donors to eat before donating and to bring along your ID or donor card. This clinic is being sponsored by the North Battleford Lions Club.

Wednesday will also see a musical evening at Living Faith Chapel. The Bontrager Family Singers will be in concert at 7:30 p.m. Expect gospel songs of many different genres. "Our style is varied and doesn't fit neatly into any category, but you could probably call us a bluegrass/southern gospel mix," says the group's website.

July 1, the City of North Battleford 2013 Centennial Canada Day Celebration will be all about family fun.

Taking place at the Battlefords Agricultural Society grounds, the jam-packed day starts with breakfast at 8 a.m.

Following opening ceremonies, to take place at 9 a.m., North Battleford's own version of The Amazing Race will kick off. A prize of $20,000 is in the offering as teams of four individuals each take part in the elimination-based race, modeled after the popular TV show. They will be "racing" across the city throughout the day, returning to the grounds in the evening.

A variety of activities are planned, with entertainment starting at 11:45 a.m. and running throughout the day, from music to dance. There will be a craft and artisan show and a display of vintage autos as well.

The kids should be well entertained with a petting zoo, balloon animals, face painting, inflatable activities and water park.

Of course, the fireworks will be a highlight. They are to take place around 11 p.m. But it's not over then. Musical entertainment will continue afterward.
