Outdoor education at Jackfish Lake nets bites but no fish

The month did not start out with April showers, so everyone will have to wait and see if there are any flowers by May. Hopefully, no more snowstorms and lots of sunshine.

The Grade 7 and 8 class was finally able to go on their ice fishing/outdoor education excursion to Jackfish Lake, March 26. It had been postponed earlier in the month because of the cold weather. Soon after the holes were dug and the students dropped their hooks into the water, several felt tugs on their lines. Unfortunately, those big ones escaped. Several did hook and catch some lovely seaweed and ice chunks, but they were unable to catch any fish. They had a great experience and a lot of fun.

A very successful fundraiser was held for Nate Starycki and his family. Hot dogs were sold and many generous donations were also received. A total of $620 was raised to present to Nate and his family. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the fundraiser in any way. MCS staff and students hope Nate knows they miss him and think of him very often.

The Grades 2-5 choir enjoyed an ice cream cake in music class last week. The cake was to thank the students for all their hard work in preparation for the Hafford Music Festival. They worked very hard and their efforts showed in their results. The cake was enjoyed by the students and staff.

Elementary house leagues are just finishing ringette. They will be starting a new sport next week. The sports have helped pass the long, cold noon hours.

The Grades 2-6 classes enjoyed their final skate of the season March 27. The ice was still in great shape. It is so nice having the rink attached to the school. Everyone enjoyed a nice cup of hot chocolate after the final skate. Thanks again to everyone who keeps the ice in such great shape.

A professional development day was held at the school March 28 for all staff. Cort Dogniez from the Saskatchewan Professional Development Unit was the speaker. He spoke on Addressing Equity and Social Justice issues in the classroom. A lot of good information was presented and discussion followed.

The Maymont Hotel supplied soup and sandwiches for lunch.

Janna Ferris, Grade 7, played in one final hockey tournament for the season. Her peewee provincial team won the peewee division at this open tournament. Well done, Janna!

Staff and students would like to welcome Carson Ducharme to kindergarten. They also welcome back Carter Amson to Grade 12. Carter spent the winter in Lethbridge playing hockey with the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The SLC sold sundaes last Thursday. These sundaes were to commemorate the first sundae ever sold, in the 1800s. They were very tasty. It is great the SLC is always coming up with new ideas.

Good luck to the senior and junior badminton teams as they attend their conference playoffs next week. The juniors travel to Leoville for their playoffs and the seniors will be at the North Battleford Comprehensive High School.

Hope everyone has a healthy start to April!
