One result of the powerful wind that blew through the town Jan. 15.

Twelve years ago it was a very cold day and a very tense one but, thanks to doctors and nurses both in Unity and RUH, we were blessed with a seven pound boy who scrapped his way through some early difficulties to wear the ever-present giant grin we get to enjoy each day. Happy birthday, Landon!

Well it appears we are destined for just as weird a winter as last year. Although the snowfall hasn't been as similar, the rapid temperature changes, enormous winds that came Jan. 15 and the variation between rain and snowfall is certainly chalking up to make it another winter we will remember for years to come. Plus temperatures for several days into the weekend of Jan. 18 was a bonus.

I am hoping that slight increase of sunlight we see each day will help us remember eventually the winter will leave, making way for spring once again.

With regards to flu season, health regions are still limiting their vaccinations to the most compromised in our communities. Please try and understand this as I can only imagine how difficult it is for health care people to address these concerns and frustrations. In the meantime, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Wash your hands often and properly and clean often those surfaces at work and home that could carry viruses. There certainly are reports recommending the increase of vitamins C and D and echinacea intake help boost the immune system.

UCHS is a busy place. Semester final exams run from Jan. 28 through to Jan. 31. This wraps up the first half of Grade 12 for seniors, leading them to the last leg of their high school experience. The journalism class is up to some more greatness and I will report on this in the weeks ahead.

Basketball season continues and curling teams will be preparing for their upcoming district and regional playdowns. You can always log on to the www.lskysd.ca website and click on schools to choose Unity Composite High school and read all about what is happening at our high school, including digital copies of the latest newsletters.

UPS weathered the extreme cold and wind by holding breaks indoors. With the gorgeous weather it's fun to see snow creations develop on their playground. Soon the music festival choir will start practices for this year's festival. Senior students are busy with basketball and curling practices. The Division II students will enjoy a ski day at Table Mountain upcoming in February.

St. Peter's School is also busy with a variety of activities. Practices will soon begin for their music festival performances. The AR reading program is always in full swing with challenges and rewards offered to encourage students to enjoy and develop their reading skills. Basketball and curling are also in season as students prepare for upcoming events in both sports. St. Peter's playground is also a creative winter wonderland of snow creations.

The Steve Nash basketball program for students in Grades 3-6 has begun at the UCHS junior gym Wednesdays and Thursdays. This program, in its third year, has been a big hit with kids who are looking for other activities in the winter and the community is fortunate to have several community coaches step up to look after the program.

Hockey, hockey, hockey there is plenty of it to enjoy at the rink. Provincial teams are getting geared up for their respective provincial playdowns; as well teams are winding up regular league play and heading into February league playoff season.

You will want to be sure to check the weekly schedule hanging at the arena for what's coming up at the rink. This schedule includes public skating times. You can also view this schedule on the Town of Unity website. So whether you enjoy watching the youngest hockey stars or the experienced older divisions or even senior hockey at its finest, there is always a spot in the bleachers for the fans.

Come on down to the curling rink where you can watch the Scotties, Olympics and the Brier on the 60-inch flat screen while you catch some live curling action with your favourite curlers. There is league action every night of the week so you have the best of both worlds, and can share your views on the Season of Champions as Canadian curlers participate on the TSN broadcast on the big screen in the lounge.

The JayDee AgTech Annual Men's Open is looking for teams to curl Feb. 4 - 9. You can enter your team by calling the curling club at 306-228-2212.

The meal alone is worth the ticket price when it's the spectacular feast prepared by wildlife members who have perfected the gourmet dishes of wild fish and game. Whether you are a curling fan, NFL fan or NHL fan, there is always one or more of these topics covered on coffee row. The weather seems to enjoy first place at the discussion table, as it always keeps us guessing and reviewing. With the ever-so-slight increase in daylight each day, it is hard not to hint at the thoughts of spring and when its arrival could come or what it might bring. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
