Happy Valentine's Day everyone! Whether it's a big gesture or a reserved one, don't forget to appreciate your loved ones tomorrow.
The schools are all enjoying a last day of classes as they head into a week-long spring break starting with the Family Day holiday Monday. Then it will be back to the books big time as there is only 16 - yes, I said 16 - weeks of school left until summer break. For graduating students, this is a mere four months to cherish the last term of high school before heading off onto the road of opportunity. Enjoy your break, everyone!
Congratulations UCHS junior basketball as the boys took a bronze medal in North Battleford Feb. 8 and the girls took a silver medal at home. We will be hearing some results from senior basketball soon.
Remember, just because school is not in session next week and those bright neon yellow signs aren't up doesn't mean there are no children on our school's playgrounds over the break. If you make it a habit to slow down in the school zones, then you won't have to readjust your habits once school is in.
Olympic fever has come to town. Several businesses have decked out with Olympic decorations as well as offering contests and promotions to help get in the Olympic spirit. During the school break, locals will also be cheering on several Unity athletes at the Saskatchewan Winter games in Prince Albert. It is a winter sports enthusiast's dream season.
Provincial and league playdowns have filled the arena schedule. All divisions are into their provincial playoffs as well as the start of their league playoffs. There will be no lack of hockey right from the youngest divisions to the senior hockey Miners' program. With four championship banners earned last year, hopes are high for some repeat wins.
Hats off to all of those players and coaches who have worked so hard all season to get to this point. Win or lose, you should all be proud of the commitment and dedication it takes to complete your hockey season.
You will want to be sure to check the weekly schedule hanging at the arena for what's coming up at the rink. This schedule includes public skating times, which are often revised in playoff season. You can also view this schedule on the Town of Unity website. There is always a spot in the bleachers for the fans.
Staring Feb. 18, the excitement begins at the curling rink as they host the Affinity Credit Union Provincial Men's and Women's Senior Curling Championships. You can buy passes for the week or per day and watch some excellent live curling action as the best teams in the province compete for a provincial title and a chance to compete at Canadians.
The seating area has plenty of space, in addition to the viewing area created upstairs to watch this event. Remember, we are one of the few curling clubs that have far-end cameras to make those "closest to the button" calls. Amongst competitors competing will be our very own Wanda Heit as Team Gilles looks to repeat as provincial senior women's champions.
Representatives from the Town of Unity, including our own Mayor Maljan, stood strong in the bear pit sessions on train safety in our communities. It was clear, coming from news reports from the recent SUMA convention, communities are voicing their concerns over rail line safety through their towns
Curling fans have plenty to talk about on coffee row. Whether it's the Olympics, the Scotties or the upcoming Brier, or even all the happenings at the local curling rink, "being shot" is a good topic! Nasty continuous cold creating hordes of ice in town is also something reviewed on a regular basis. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
