MAYMONT — The busiest month of the school year, June, has arrived. The curriculum outcomes are being completed, exams are being made and year-end excursions are being planned.

The kindergarten to Grade 5 students finished The World According to Humphrey. The adorable hamster was very happy and helped many people. Students had a great time running through the hamster maze – obstacle course – that was constructed outdoors. Many of them ran through it several times.

The concluding activity was a group assembly where students watched a video from the author, Betty G. Birney. She showed the students where she writes and the stuffed hamster toy that was her inspiration.

This was the first book done in the One School, One Book program and it was a very successful venture. The plan is to do another book next year.

Two of our younger students, Anneka and Emma Harder were part of the cast of the musical, Mary Poppins, that was performed May 27 and 28 at the Dekker Centre in North Battleford. They sang songs, wore cook hats  and wore letters to spell song words. It was a very entertaining performance and the girls did an excellent job.

Maymont Central School had a strong showing at the track and field meet held in North Battleford May 27 and 28. All of the athletes should be proud of their performances and the way they conducted themselves as a team by cheering and encouraging each other.

On day one, Katie Serhienko and Audrey Friesen endured the heat to complete the 1500m run. Sean Brehon placed fifth in the 1500m. It was a hot day and the students did well to finish in the heat.

Ashton Harris, Grade 7, finished second in his age group in the 1500m run. His brother, Brayden Harris, was fourth in his age group.

Kimberly Wawryk and Janna Ferris both completed their races with personal best times. All their training and dedication boosted them to excellent runs.

Arin Amson and Keara Amson placed first in the 400m. Keara Amson advances to the provincial meet this weekend in Yorkton. She also qualified for provincials in the discus throw and 100m because she also placed first in both of these events.

Carlee Hamilton, Grade 11, placed second in the javelin throw. With this result, she qualified to go to the provincial meet as well.

On day two, Ashton Harris was second in the 800m. The Grade 7s are too young to compete at provincials, otherwise Ashton would qualify to attend the Yorkton meet.

Three sisters, Arin, Keara and Autumn Amson, along with Audrey Friesen, competed in the 4x400 relay. It was unique to have three sisters on the same team.

Keara Amson received the silver medal for overall points in the midget age group.

Congratulations to all of the athletes. Thanks to Ryan Nickell and Roxanne Jordan for all the time they dedicated to training the athletes.

There are some new murals around the school. They are part of the visual arts 30 collaborative projects. The visual arts 30 students, led by Aliyah Wasmuth with help from Patience Brown and Tia Mongrand, painted a cougar busting out of bricks on the wall of the gym. The cougar is the Maymont School symbol for athletics.

Jan Friesen and Jocelyn Bzdel are creating a mobile for the library.

Arielle Hamp, Tori Hamp and Kaitlin Bailey are creating an imaginative mural for the kindergarten room.

Students participated in the Marafun run in Saskatoon May 31. This was a 2.2km run. Krista Gray had donated her time to train the runners. Participants were Brodie and Taylor Gray, Brooke and Janna Ferris, Makenna and Rylan Voegeli, Allison and Kimberley Wawryk, Michelle Garrett, Jenna Fouhy and Ashton Harris.

There were over 700 runners in Marafun. Ashton Harris crossed the finish line first, Janna Ferris was second and Kimberly Wawryk was third. They ran in memory of Ethan Nabsib.

Mr. Nickell took 18 high school students to the swimming pool in North Battleford June 1, for a scuba diving course. They had dryland training and then practised in the swimming pool.
