"Oil Can Gertie," our very own Gertie Sherman, has an article in More of Our Canada, published by Reader's Digest. Congratulations, Gertie.

Gertie has a unique collection of oil squirt cans in her garage.

Gertie began her collection at a yard sale in British Columbia several years ago, where she bought two copper oil cans for only 50 cents each. She says she was hooked.

While taking in auction sales, she and her husband would bypass the household items and head for the farm machinery to ferret out the oil cans. They were usually dirty and needed to be rehabilitated before being added to her shelves of cans in all shapes and sizes.

Gertie and her husband once visited Rocanville, which boasts a giant oil can measuring three metres across and almost nine metres high. She has replicas of that can in her collection.

While cleaning her oil cans recently, Gertie was inspired to write about them and Reader's Digest liked her story. She is 95 years old and still very active. She has enjoyed collecting oil cans and now has more than 300.

Watch for next week's paper - lots of news. Maymont will be holding another trade show May 24 in the Maymont Hall. Anyone wanting to book tables, please give Carol a call at 1-306-389-2440. If no one is home, please leave a message. Also keep watching for the date of our garage sale.
