Nora Rongve mixes a dash of warm colours into a predominantly cool landscape.

What colours work together in a garden?

I asked my husband these exact same words the first time I thought I would attempt a flower garden.

He told me something that a gal from his work once said. "Nothing clashes in nature." I came to realize the more I looked around the yards and gardens in my neighbourhood, this statement was true.

I am an artist and an interior designer so I work with a lot of colour. I mix blues with browns or greens with purples but all is much different when it's outside with lush lawns and shrubbery as their backdrop.

When it comes to designing the inside of homes, my feeling is always to warm things up, because we spend most of our cold months indoors. In the garden, I seem to gravitate to cooler tones. I guess it's because the outdoors are warm and I feel the coolness in the refreshing blues, purples and greens.

I am only in my third year of tending to my very own garden but have learned more as each year passed. I love flowers and planters at different levels with my cool colours but in various shades of their colour. I tend to throw a patch of warm colours in every now and then for some variance, but predominantly the cool tones are my favorites.
