Allison and Lionel Hawryliw recently presented the annual grant from the Nico Hawryliw Fund to the Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation for the Community Oncology Program of Saskatchewan (COPS).
This unit, located at the Battlefords Union Hospital, allows cancer patients to receive chemotherapy here, instead of having to travel to Saskatoon or farther for treatment. The amount of $1,220.18 is this year's annual grant from the endowed fund.
"This fund was originally established to help offset medical costs during Nico's fight with cancer," said Heath Gabruch, Battlefords and District Community Foundation board chair. "The intent was to help his family through a challenging time."
The donations were later transferred to an endowed fund that will continue to support local groups with annual grants.
BDCF creates endowed funds using donations from the community. Donations are put into a permanent endowment and only the annual income is used for the grant. The principal stays in the endowment forever.
There are community foundations across Canada that have been meeting community needs for over 100 years. The BDCF currently holds 19 funds that will provide funding for a range of interests from the arts and health care to high school scholarships and recreation.
