HUMBOLDT — A new store on Main Street is focused on selling authentic food from Ukraine, Poland, Germany, Russia and Moldova.

Krystal Huculak, the owner of Komora, said since opening in November, the support she received in the community was “phenomenal”.

“I think just the authenticity of the product— it’s traditional Polish and Ukrainian straight from those countries. The product ships straight from those countries.”

Born in the Humboldt area, before opening the shop Huculak was a construction safety officer in the community.

She said she felt downtown Humboldt would benefit from a European specialty shop.

“The stores that you find in Regina and Saskatoon like this, I’ve been a big supporter of them for a few years now. That is what inspired me,” Huculak said.

“The specialty food line that I carry, I think it helps a lot of people in Humboldt feel like they’re at home.”

The creation of the store wasn’t without delays, Huculak said, with many of the products requiring overseas shipping.

“There have been some headaches for sure,” she said.

“COVID definitely threw some curveballs. Delays with shipping was a big one, not being able to sit down with people face-to-face and have conversations about what I was looking for and what I wanted to do.”

For people new to this type of cuisine, Huculak recommends starting with her line of perogies, sausages or cheeses.

Personally, Huculak said her favourite food is sauerkraut perogies — which her store carries.

“I think just the pierogis and the sauerkraut, they’re just good, the right thing.”

Komora, located at 537 Main Street, is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday at 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Thursdays they are open until 9 p.m., and on Saturdays close at 5 p.m.
